It is best to keep the pad separated from the building foundation. If they are connected vibrations from the condenser unit will travel into the building and increase the noise level heard inside.

Suggest tamping down the soil before adding the sand. I always pick the rocks out of the spoils and throw them back in before tamping. Then a little sand on top of that. The slab doesn't have to be flush with grade. Some drain advantages to be a little higher.

use 2 inches of 1/2 or 1" gravel under the pad. Yes really.
