This scene STILL holds itself among today's special effects and scripting. Lucas was so far ahead of his time. I saw this in 77 at 12 and STILL love it to this day.

Obi-Wan: I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced.

She is calm and collected yet defiant, but when she realizes her home is indeed about to be lost, the entire facade drops. Brilliant acting by Carrie Fisher.

"Look at him, he's heading for that small moon, I think I can get him before he gets there, he's almost in range, that's no moon, it's a space station, it's too big to be a space station"

I remember watching an interview of Carrie Fisher where she said she had a really hard time in this scene taking mean to Peter Cushing because he was such a nice man.

Stewie Griffin:"Nah Liam is dead, Samuel is dead, Natalie is dead, Ewan and Alec is dead, Oz is dead, Hayden and James is dead, Harrison is dead, Mark is dead, Carrie is dead, and Adam is dead! And who's left in the Movie? Daisy and John remains!"

If anything, the destruction of Alderaan ultimately helped bring about the defeat of the Empire. After that "demonstration", more and more systems would realize that they had no choice BUT to oppose the Empire if they hoped to survive and not randomly be made an "example" of. A good example is many surviving Alderaanians joined the Rebel Alliance immediately, including the vast majority of Alderaanians who had joined the Imperial military. Others, too, throughout the galaxy who had been opposed to the Empire but reluctant to risk themselves or draw the Empire's attention to their worlds realized that neutrality was essentially choosing the possibility of complete destruction for little or no reason, and also chose to join the Rebel cause.

According to the novelization I think, the person who was in charge of pulling the Death Star's trigger was so wracked with guilt after Alderaan that he deliberately delayed the second shot so that the Rebels can have a chance of destroying the space station.

Grand Moff Tarkin made Alderaan choices in this scene because it backfired on him quite badly in the end.

How heartbreaking, Grand Moff Tarkin promises Leia that the Death Star will not destroy Alderaan if she reveals the location of the rebel base and while Leia answering saying its on Dantooine (Leia however lied, there was once a rebel base on Dantooine but it was abandoned, the rebel base is on Yavin 4 in reality, because Leia wasn’t going to risk the safety of the rebellion to protect her homeworld and adoptive parents.) Tarkin decides to have the Death Star destroy Alderaan anyway deeming Dantooine to be too remote to test the Death Star’s power and Alderaan to be more worthy for the test due to it being part of the core worlds, and to punish the world and Bail Organa and Breda Organa for supplying and aiding the Rebellion against the Empire and Leia could do nothing but watch in horror as the Death Star destroys Alderaan reducing it to an asteroid belt and killing everyone on the planet including Leia’s adoptive parents Bail Organa and Breda Organa as Obi-Wan feels this as a disturbance in the force. And little does Leia know that her biological father Darth Vader was by her side as her adoptive parents Bail Organa and Breda Organa and all her closest friends from her childhood and millions of innocent people die on Alderaan during its destruction. Tarkin also passes the moral event horizon as the Death Star destroys Alderaan and he gets laser-guided karma for it later on after the rebels in the Battle of Yavin and Luke destroy and explode the Death Star killing everyone on board including Tarkin himself.

Technically the highest kill count of any movie in history... Due to this scene. 😮 (Unless destroying Vulcan had a higher body count.)
