With this single act, the Empire revealed how truly evil it was. An entire world, heavily populated, peaceful and beloved across the galaxy, brutally murdered. And it wound up backfiring horribly because far from being cowed in fear, the galaxy rose in disgust and outrage over such an atrocity.

As tragic as this was, it was also one the Empire's worst mistakes: the destruction of Alderaan caused thousands of Alderaanians, who had been off-world, to immediately join the Rebellion, and most Alderaanian members of the Imperial military promptly defected to the Rebel Alliance. It also caused thousands from other Core Worlds to join the Rebellion.

So rather than scaring the galaxy into submission as Tarkin intended, it caused the Rebel Alliance to turn from a minor annoyance into a major threat

If you pause at exactly 2:09 you can see Alderaan's planetary shield briefly overload right before the planet gets blown to bits. Say what you will about the special editions but I like those neat hidden lore tidbits added in there.

This ultimately proved that the Empire's Rule Through Fear doctrine which was created by Tarkin turned out to be the Empire's undoing.

Very telling of Leia's character that even after her home world was destroyed, she did not descend into despair and it only motivated her even more to bring down the Empire. There was an issue of the Marvel Star Wars comics in which Leia met a stormtrooper who was born in Alderaan and he wore a piece of rock from the planet as a token. He died at the end of the issue leaving Leia heartbroken holding the piece of token in her hand.
