Time-restricted feeding is just one approach to regulating food intake that many people find useful for weight loss, but others find it less useful than simply caloric restriction across a “normal” meal distribution.

Of course, this is individual, but there are certain incentives to fasting that most people don’t consider. Dr. Gabrielle Lyon is the guest on the current Huberman Lab podcast, which is out now. She discusses some of the advantages of fasting as well as who should probably avoid fasting.

During the episode, we discuss protein intake and sources and specific types of training for men and women as it relates to physical health and longevity of the body and brain. There’s also an extensive discussion about nutrition and supplementation and a discussion of different types of training, as well as essential takeaways about mindset for building lasting vigor and health.

When you are old you want first and foremost be free of serious diseases like cancers, which are these times increasing significantly, and probably not very interested in showing your muscles in the gym.For me the choice is clear.
Fasting+exercise+good diet+spirituality= Long life

I’m 48, I’ve been a personal trainer and amateur body builder for over 20 years, TRE (and some prolonged fasting) saved my life before it was so popular, no muscle loss, stronger than ever, and I plan to do it for the rest of my life.

Fasting drastically supported bringing down my blood pressure from 150 to 120, now 100.
However, it spiked my LDL cholesterol to 181 from 168 and the only thing that got it down to 140 was working that metabolic rate and the heart muscle by intense and rigorous workouts ( mainly cardio everyday) for 2-3 months.

We beat the cardiologist and the statins he was trying to prescribe...to live another day!

I am a 62 years old very active woman & have been on TRE ( eating every 20 hours) for the past four years! And I have had no problem putting on muscles💪🏻💪🏻 TRE according to Dr. Pradit Jamnadas increases Growth Hormones(which allows to maintain muscles).

I'm 67, and fast twice a week. I've never had a problem from that and never had in medication for more than 35 years.

1. You make excellent points.
2. I’m a 90/10 Carnivore.
3. And I generally fast 22/2 daily.
4. But at 66 & daily working out with weights, I’m finding it increasingly more difficult to have sufficient energy to complete my usual routine.
5. I’m finding 18/6 and incorporating minimal carbs helps with beginning & completing my workouts.

Au contraire: Fasting and then excercising in a fasted state leads to a rise in human growth hormone and testosterone. The best results were shown after an 18 hour fasting period. This makes it very much recommendable to do intermittent fasting (or some type of an OMAD diet) for older people, struggling to grow or even retain muscle mass.

Fasting is beneficial when you’re older 👍.

I have a solution. Fast but have a protien shake. Really. It works. It's technically not fasting but chalk it up to protecting skeletal tissue. And she is right--you will lose muscle mass without protien.

Fasting is great for those who need a tool to help combat other issues.

I find that older people ie 80+ do well with bone broths, puréed hearty soups with many different vegetables, ground meat and seafood bc their digestive system (ie enzyme production, stomach acid, peristalsis, etc.) is often not as robust. Of course there are exceptions.

So as long as your older and still training it's still OK to fast?

Truth!!! I'm actively doing both at different times and I can see the limitations and the gains for doing both. As with everything, you need to have the wisdom to know when to apply each according to where your body is at the time.

This is where diagnostics and regular testing of your body biometrics is muy importante

How old is “older”. I wish he would’ve asked. I’m 46 and like to use 24-60 hr fasts as a way to bring my weight down, but I’m also lifting and don’t want to lose muscle during my fasts. Are the 40’s considered “older” for the sake of this conversation?
