Why Many People Are Abandoning Intermittent Fasting

Intermittent fasting does more harm than good from the current research that we’ve got. The clinical guidelines do not promote it, and other medical doctors such as Dr Peter Attia warn of the dangers of losing lean muscle mass

I've done 20/4 intermittent fast for the last 5 months. It has changed my life. I have more energy, my mind is clearer and I experience absolutely no depression. I am optimistic and feel better than I have felt in years and am very close to the body weight I had when I was in high school. I am 76 years of age.

All I know is intermittent fasting is literally the best thing I've ever done for my health.

The thing is.. for me, it is so so much easier to maintain a calorie deficit with intermittent fasting. Trying to maintain a calorie deficit with normal meals throughout the day always causes me stress and I can't handle it

The only thing I got from this video is you can find a study finding whatever it is you want to believe.

Intermittent fasting and prolonged fasting has changed my life for the better.

Intermittent fasting helps me not feel hungry. If I can go 12 hours or more without eating the the hunger stops. My stomach literately stops growling for food. If I eat more but smaller meals I am always hungry.

I've been a powerlifter/bodybuilder for over 20 years. About 4 years ago I started time-restricted eating (TRE) and settled at a 18:6. I lost about 30 lbs. of mostly fat, am stronger and leaner than I was in my 20's (I'm now 40). I do, however, get 250-300 grams of protein within that 6 hour feeding window (mostly meat, eggs, dairy, and protein supplements). I train *very* hard in the weight room. Before TRE, I had high triglycerides and low HDL (not good). I was also heading toward pre-diabetes. Now, my triglycerides are lower than my HDL and my insulin sensitivity has improved dramatically (HA1C 5.3). This doesn't work for everyone, but it works for me and I'll never go back to a standard eating pattern.

At age 84 my main motivation for fasting is autophagy so I water fast for 4 days once per month.
One possible success is that a spot on my right lung apparently disappeared after several months of my 4 days per month fasting.

Tried a few windows and found 12-14 hrs fasting works well. With 16, I lost muscle mass but learnt easy discipline. With 14 hrs fasting I gained muscle. IF gets you comfy with hunger, it helps you stop snacking, which helps with blood sugar.

Time-restricted eating (intermittent fasting) does no harm. Stop scaring people.

there are so many studies about everything that we can choose the study we want to match our ideas.

Intermittent fasting makes me feel better. I eat a lot of proteins (1g per 1cm of height) and I'm physically active. I gained muscle mass and lost fat. It works for me, so I'll just stick with my 18/6 cycle, thank you for your input Dr.

Almost every comment here (if not every comment) is a testament to how IF has transformed the health of the commenter. My own experience is the same. Dropped 70 lbs, no more pre-diabetes, or high blood pressure or high cholesterol . My doctor lectures me about the pitfalls of IF and low carb but then says he's never seen an HDL as good as mine.

I’m not questioning intermittent fasting but I’m seriously questioning your doctoral degree!

I started IF coupled with Keto October 15, 2022 after a visit to my Dr. showed me that I was obese with a body mass index of near 33. He said my blood pressure was way to high... which it was. I started IF and Keto that day... during the next four months I lost 54 pounds and have kept it off since. I am 62 years old and now weigh 148 pounds at 5'7". I have not lost any muscle mass and feel wonderful. I only know that it has worked for me. By the by, I eat OMAD (one hour). I do walk a couple of miles each day but I rarely do any resistance training. I have no health problems and my blood pressure (which used to be high before I started IF and Keto) is now normal. So, there's that. Cheers. -G

Admitting that you were wrong and changing your practices when new data becomes available isn't flip-flopping. It's being an intelligent, thoughtful person.

Time-restricted eating does not need to cause a loss of muscle mass. In fact, I have gained considerable muscle mass while time-restricted eating as have many others. Deferral to medical authorities and a select few studies is pretty slim evidence and does not negate the experiences of many thousands. Even if time-restricted eating was just due to caloric restriction, which it likely isn't, it is still an effective way to improve metabolic and overall health and performance.

I started IF about a month ago, restricting calories for the previous 10 months. Down about 35 lbs., started back at the gym about 6 months ago and continue to get stronger. For me IF makes managing my calories so much easier! I no longer wake up hungry (my window is 12 - 8 pm), and I'm not hungry at bedtime. I used to alternate between feeling bloated and full to ravenously hungry, sometimes in a matter of minutes, not anymore. IF is also helping me revise my old ideas about how much food I actually need to eat. I'm nearing 67 and just don't require the same number of calories I did when I was younger and it's taking some time to look at a meal and think "if I eat just that I'm going to be starving in an hour", not true any more. I am learning to emphasize my protein intake, I do snack midway through, I go to the gym 4-5 days a week and usually in the evening. I feel great, am stronger than I've been in years, and wear 32" waist pants again. I all IF has to offer me is a tool to manage hunger and calorie intake I'm good with that.

Hi Brad, I've been watching your videos for years but this is the first time I've commented. I also did intermittent fasting for much of my 20's, when I really should have been eating well and training hard at this time instead. I have come to believe that the old adage of "breakfast like a king, etc." is true, and if you are going to fast it's best to eat a small early dinner and fast over night, in line with the circadian rhythm. You are a legend and one of the only drs on YouTube I fully trust as a clinician and scientist. I especially love how you are always prepared to review new data and go back on things you might have thought in the past, as a true scientist should. You inspire me, and if time and money weren't a factor (I'm just a couple of years younger than you I think) I would love to go to med school and help people like you do. All the best man, keep doing what you do! 👍

For me IF combined with low carbohydrate has been transformational. In two months I’ve lost almost twenty pounds of fat. I eat healthier than before, much healthier as I have stopped processed foods, sugar and eat almost no grains and no seed oils which are toxic. Intermittent fasting when done properly isn’t unhealthy when everything I’ve noticed about my health has improved. I don’t starve myself. I don’t have strong hunger pangs because I’ve stabilized my blood sugar levels instead of the insulin yo-yo of the standard American diet. Fasting can help, with fatty liver and insulin resistance. Any study needs to include the dietary habits of participants. I’m almost 60 and lift weights religiously in the evening and have lost no strength. I have more stamina and don’t have sugar crash tiredness after meals with carbs as previously.
