Running easy can lead to you running faster. It’s so true, far too many of us run too fast too much of the time in training and as a result, don’t reach our full potential in racing. Heather will be explaining how this works and how you can alter your training to optimize your speed!

Do you run slower to help you run faster?

It is odd how many times I need to hear this advice.

I started training for my first tri (from couch potato status) unable to run a mile without walking or feeling completely dead afterward. I'm now about 2 months in, been using the 80/20 training style and I ran my first 10k today...without stopping. It did take about an hour and 15 min but still, I'm quite chuffed

If running slow leads to running faster, I should be soooo fast!

LOVE this. I am completely sold on running slower to get fast. I do MAF training and it is something that I have fallen in love with. I have gone from running paces of over 10 minutes per mile to 7:50 minutes per mile. Aerobic base has been such a big part of my training. For pretty much all of 2020, I have been working on building my base. This has changed my running journey. Thanks for the video!

Especially now with the slightly cooler weather it even becomes wayy easier to keep the heart rate low without falling asleep during the run :)

Really enjoyed the video, good work explaining the science behind it all!

Good video! Winter time is the perfect time to really focus on making easy runs easy since heart rate is lower by default in cooler temps!

I read the 80/20 training book last year, I still have difficulty running slower, but I understand the benefit and of course it helps me to run longer too

Way to cover this topic and a perfect explanation Heather!

As a coach myself this is exactly what I advocate to all my athletes.

Great video, thanks for mentioning some of the other low-HR training methods (MAF). I still struggle with trying not to obsess over where the line is between Zone 2 and Zone 3, as even whether it's 149 bpm or 154 bpm (for me) will change how well I'm sticking to the 80/20 distribution quite a bit

Definitely found this to be true when training for my last marathon. I ended up racing an average of 1:30 faster per mile than the pace for about 80% of my training runs, and I felt pretty great throughout. So much of training is mental - it's incredibly challenging to not feel pressured to run harder during training in order to "prove" to ourselves we'll be able to run fast come race day. Great breakdown!

I just bought the 80/20 book so this is perfect timing for me!

Oh Heather, what perfect timing! Not a bold statement at all. Had a ding dong with many youtubers on here who argue with me publicly or privately saying i talk BS! But this video has all the science and proof, so thank you! Most of my running is slow and easy, but continually get shouted down by the know all's who say to run fast, you have to run fast! BTW, yesterday i got a 5k PB at age 59, whilst marathon training....i guess i train too slow, eh?
