Burnout in young runners is all too common. I’ve seen kids ranked first in the country in middle school that burnout and never improve all the way through high school.

I think this is a difficult subject, especially if you have a competitive team and you are a competitive athlete. I think your analysis as a pro runner is spot on. However, as a competitive high school athlete especially a distance runner, it may not as easy. You mention having fun in the fall and winter if you're a track Athlete. That is true if you are a sprinter or a field athlete. In PA almost all high school cross country teams start summer training in late June or early July but kick it in to serious at beginning of August. Cross country seasons run through October. Then the Indoor track picks up around Thanksgiving. The indoor track season runs until middle February, or the end of February if you are competing nationally. Spring track picks up the second week of March, to the end of May, maybe even into June if you are competing Nationally. It's tough but I agree with you need to find balance, it's even harder when you have a competitive team and are running not just for yourself.

As a 15 year old I totally agree with this. After all my peak races of half marathons I take 7-14 days off. And it helps so much mentally and physically. I also take down weeks here and there

Even though I never ran competitively and never really worried about burnout with that, it’s been something I’ve thought about more as I prepare to swim in college and I worry about the workload being too much for me mentally. Very important video, thank you!

I remember last year I started training for a half marathon so I started training and my first race was a 5k so about two weeks before the 5k it got canceled so I was like damn any ways I still have my 10k about a week before the 10k it got canceled so I was like I have no times but I’m still gonna run the half then it got canceled so I trained so hard for nothing so I kinda gave up on running for months and I regretted that come xc season

Unless your a decathlete or other multi-eventer, you need to pick the events that fit what your goal is for that season. Are you trying to set PRs or are you trying to win certain events? If you do track AND field don't do more than 2 of each at a meet. Not like me last year. I was a crazy man averaging 6 events per meet but that was due to COVID only having a 3 month season to compete and earn some marks for official world rankings. My goal was to set as many PRs and rank as high as I could in as many events as I could for that year. I was literally running back and forth from the field and the track with maybe 5 minutes in between each event. Definitely burnt out by the last meet but last year was an exceptional year. Once meets open up again this year I will be a bit more selective. Probably alternate between Outdoor Pent, running, throws, jumps and Throws Pent. Not doing the same events every week but using different muscle groups for each meet.
