This video series is an educational project brought to you by Google.
1. Know your limits: Know what signs / symptoms do you experience when getting burned out? What can you look out for and are there things you can do earlier before it gets too bad?
2. Boundaries: What they are and how to maintain them. Boundaries can be talked about in consideration to my property and your property, but when it comes to our mental health a boundary is something we set up to keep us safe, happy, and healthy. Meaning we have to decide where the line is between us feeling good and happy and us feeling tired and upset. So recognize what symptoms you experience when feeling burned out, so you can notice it more quickly. Decide how much you are willing to give to your work or...

My coworkers very often come into my office to just chat while I’m having lunch and I don’t feel good telling them to leave…so I’ll start eating in my car and then going for a walk. Also prevents people from just coming in with work related questions

Could you do a video about burnout and college? As a college student, I feel like all these things to prevent and treat burnout are helpful, but difficult when it comes to college life bc of the high expectations placed on students by themselves, professors, and even parents.

I am an artist with major depressive disorder. Started after/during puberty and I’m 50years old. I struggle with organization, boundaries and compartmentalization and burnout. Lol 🙋🏼‍♀️ I have no answers, but painting is my only place I get peace. If my studio gets too filled up with crazy I have to take a few hours to clean up (minimally but that’s what works for me)

I'm super interested to hear Kati's opinion on education and jobs like that where you generally DON'T get to take a break for lunch, much less take a break every 45 minutes as she suggests.

Katie can you do a video about improving time management skills?

One of the hardest things for most persons with a nervous disorder like me is to consistently and consciously slow down muscular actions. This includes trying to slow down your speech, typing on your phone, chores around the house, walking, opening tamper proof packages and a myriad of other tasks that can be tension causing. For example, the natural tendency for me when I try to get the plastic off a bottle of Boost is to get frustrated and more aggressive but a better strategy is to realize that you can take as much time as you need and slow down. This saves a great deal of pressure on your nerves. The problem is that unless we are aware of it we revert to our old tense habits so it requires constant practice and awareness (or mindfulness is the new catch phrase.) Unfortunately too, there are situations like driving, caregiving or a service job like a restaurant server where often one has to be at a heightened alertness. I think though in general we are more tense in our spare time than we need to be because we rush too much when we absolutely don't need to. I see this issue even in my relatively well friends and family and certainly in myself. So maybe today take a little more time walking down stairs, feeding your pet and put a little more time between taps on your cellphone. Your nerves will be happier and healthier for it.

One of the things I’ve done is to give myself some grace and compassion on my mentally unwell days. I have small tasks that I take on at work when I don’t feel that I can take on a big project. That has helped me to avoid crashing and still makes me feel accomplished

Great advice Kati. I’ve done the “to do” list my whole life because that’s the only way I feel motivated to get things done and feel accomplished. I’m really loving your videos.

A weekend of doing nothing and maybe go for a hike is my way to reset and calm down. On this weekend i don't want to engage with anybody it's my alone time and sometimes i really need it.

One thing that recharged my batteries when I was in high school was going backpacking. We went backing for four days every Spring break and every Fall break. When I backpacked I wanted to get completely away from any sign of civilization. We could do this at a place we went to in Arkansas. One time we were exploring the area right at the base of a cliff. Water never reached that place, and there were about six inches of the driest dust at the foot of the cliff. We found part of a shoe, a part of a kettle, and an old mining newspaper that was dated 1906. The guy was looking for diamonds. There are a few diamonds in Arkansas. I'd like to go back to that place.

Thanks for the burnout prevention buffet Kati😂 Especially defining terms like boundries etc. It helps a lot when you understand the definitions of words

My biggest issue is I'd rather end up just a broken pile of nothing than disappoint anyone... Everyone else is more important than me so it doesn't matter what it costs me as long as they are happy.... It's a problem :/ lol thanks for the tips! Will try to implement some of them! Especially 1 and 2! Lol

I know I'm way late to the party on this, but I love to-done lists, and I love that you call them that as well. They're a great way to fight anxiety and depression. When my brain starts to tell me I haven't done anything, I can refer to my to-done list to show it all the ways it's wrong. And when I'm really struggling, "got dressed" and "took shower" are absolutely on there, because sometimes they are huge victories.

I'm glad you covered this issue. Burnout is a HUGE problem in the workplace. Studies have shown that at least 66% of employees have experienced burnout at some point in their career. Thanks for the video!
