Today I’m going to cover the interesting benefits of a long walk, especially for anxiety and depression.

Potential benefits of taking long walks on a regular basis:
• It can help improve circulation
• It can help your heart to become more efficient
• It provides more oxygen to your brain (which may improve cognitive function)
• It can promote weight loss
• It can give you energy
• It can enhance sleep
• It can improve your joints
• It can improve endurance
• It can help your blood sugars
• It can help reduce stress

Every day, we go through massive amounts of stress. Long walks may be one of the best things you can do to undo mental stress. It can increase oxygen, but at the same time, it’s a low-stress exercise. It can decrease cortisol and support the parasympathetic nervous system. It can also help improve your mood. I find taking long walks, getting out into nature, and getting space to be very helpful in extracting mental stress that accumulates throughout the day.

Taking a long walk for 30-60 minutes, or even longer, on a daily basis may help provide some of these incredible benefits.

Once you make it a habit, your body itself will ask for it every day.

I walk 6 to 7 miles a day. I’m retired and travel the states full time in an RV. My dog loves to walk. Walking has greatly diminished my PTSD.

This is so true! One more benefit not mentioned here, is that going for walks in nature are good for your eyes. Inside, we tend to only use our eye muscles to look at things that are close to us. Its usually only in nature when we use different muscles to look at things far away (a bird in the sky, things further down the trail, for instance)...
But yes - long walks are super beneficial to our health!

I suffer from severe anxiety and I’ve started walking 4 days per week by myself for about an hour or so and I’ve noticed a considerable change in my anxiety, mood, depression and PTSD. I had something very traumatic happen to me and then diagnosed with Lyme Disease in the same year. I took medication in the beginning but knew that I didn’t want to take them long term. Long walks by myself have been a game changer.

In Japan it's called Forest Bathing or “shinrin-yoku” and is given out as a therapeutic prescription.

Not gonna lie man, I was extremely depressed during the fall of 2019. One day I decided to walk home after school. I felt like maybe it would be nice and relieve the stress. It was about a two hour walk in total. I felt so much better afterwards, so this is a very interesting topic for me to learn about now.

I was doing 6-10 mile walks in spring and summer to get through lockdown. Being out in the open helped my mood immensely!

Ive been walking for 10 miles a day for a while now. I can attest it helps significantly for anxiety/depression. I'm not sucidal anymore. Also my memory has improved. And it keeps my blood sugar in check (Type 2 diabetic).

This is something all of us Introverts/Highly Sensistive People/Empaths have known for ever.

Walks in nature fuel the soul. Help relax you and bring you closer into harmony.

I just got back from my first walk in a few weeks and wouldn’t you know it, I feel better. Ive been starting to get depressed and anxious and all I cut out was the walking because I started a new job and have been feeling exhausted. Feel like I have more energy now and so decided today would be the day to get back into it and I come home to this video. What a confirmation that I NEED to continue to walk every day. I love it, it’s stupid that I stopped going. Thanks Dr Berg!

Love walking in the cold! Wrap up nice and cosy and get out there. Surprising how much body heat you make just walking. Feels so lovely to get home too..!

Going on long walks is the best, it's what I do for fun if I have a day off! Finished my thesis and was stressed out of my mind. The next day I went on a 30km walk and the therapeutic effect was amazing. I walked the residual stress out of my body, and now all that is left is calm and balance

I'm 73, my 80 yo friend and I walk forest trails every day for 1 1/2 hrs or more. Was -12c this morning, no problem. I started long walks years ago as therapy for depression. Never looked back and feel great.

I was diagnosed with diabetes 12 years ago. I went home and pitched the sugar laden sweets, put my sneakers on and started walking. I now walk about 4 to 6 miles a day and have had normal A1C since! Walking works!

I feel like I NEED to walk, for all the reasons you listed. If I don’t keep moving, things concerning my health feel like they’re deteriorating quite fast at my age.
