The reason I don’t like pepper spray for personal protection

While I wouldn't think it should be a primary weapon, where it does come in handy is dog attacks. It works about 95% of the time, and you don't have to shoot someone's dog and deal with all of that.

Long story short my friend and I tested the red pepper gel against an aerosolized tear gas & pepper combination.
*The former certainly tested my level of determination and took the fight out of me, but it wasn't incapacitating.
*The latter was instantly & utterly incapacitating. Blinded, severe respiratory distress and absolutely excruciating the instant it hit me. It 100% took me out of commission.

Is it the right choice for Paul Harrell? (Or me for that matter) Ya know, not really.
Is it the right choice for my wife when she jogs? I judged yes 😆

Anyway, just thought I'd chime in and confirm what some of the other commenters are saying, defense sprays are not created equal.

I like combo spray (Cs+OC) as part of a layered defensive system. There are times when you don't have the opportunity to disengage, you do not feel like getting involved in a fist fight, but the situation has not escalated to lethal Force. In those situations combo spray is great.

I always carry lethal and non-lethal. I see pepper spray as a long range eye poke. Makes the other person reconsider fighting, but if it fails I'm <1.5 seconds away from lethal.

👍👍I would not want to just depend on a spray but I do carry a law enforcement tear gas/ pepper spray combo along with my firearm. I always carry my firearm.

In 'Boot Camp'(Navy)...we had to stand in a tear gas room wearing a gas mask ...then take off the mask for 1 minute and give name rank & serial number...fun times...=))

I like pepper spray in my 🌮 tacos. But, I call it Tapatio Spray.

Good advice, now take a 2 second spray of POM to the face! And wash your eyes with no help! 🙏

Show me the bad guys that train to "fight through it"...nope!

It would be a good first line if deadly force "isn't" introduced by the bad guy initially... After, you'll see if bad guy turns tail an runs, or wants to escalate it to a deadly level, a which point you've already (during bad guy's reaction to being sprayed) got your firearm ready.
