Muscle isn’t just about strength—it’s about longevity, metabolic health, and even immune function. In this episode, I sit down with @DrGabrielleLyon to uncover the critical role that skeletal muscle plays in our overall health. We dive deep into muscle as an endocrine organ, its role in fighting insulin resistance, and why sedentary lifestyles are wreaking havoc on our bodies. From understanding how to build muscle effectively at any age to learning why muscle mass is the key to metabolic health, this conversation will change the way you think about strength training.

In this episode, we discuss:

Exactly how much protein we need to eat every day

The differences between plant and animal proteins

The impact of resistance training

The metabolic benefits of muscle

Why you should spread your protein intake evenly throughout the day

How sedentary behavior and insufficient protein intake can lead to muscle loss, insulin resistance, and metabolic disorders

This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, Beekeepers Naturals, Thrive Market, and Fatty15.

I am 86 yrs old male, I have never developed muscle mass as I put more emphasis on socializing, brain stimulation, and life enjoyment as priority. I have never been in a gym, What keep me alive is social dancing. I still dance 4 to 5 times a week, 2 to 3 hrs. I dance quick step, Viennese waltz, foxtrot, tango, slow waltz, rumba, cha cha, samba, salsa, bachata, west coast swing, hustle, Argentine tango. To dance all of these stimulate my brain and give some sort of physical exercise. Of course I watch my diet.

I'll be 68 years old soon. This subject isn't kind of important, it is absolutely critical. Don't eat garbage. Keep moving.

Dr. Lyon rocks. I'm a 67 year old male. 6' 2" 198 pounds. Consume 200 grams of animal protein daily. Weight train 5x weekly. Many people think I'm in my middle 40's.

I really enjoyed listening to Dr. Gabriel as a post menopausal person with some chronic inflammation this really helped me focus and motivate me to do resistance training as part of life style. Building to improve is a great mindset rather than believing there is a target number. Thank you for your great video

I'm 75, turning 76. Leg presses 200kg for 10 plus reps, plus all the other gym exercises. I've been doing this since my early 20s. Dr. Lyon is right! 😊

These are two of my favorite health influencers on YT. I bought Dr Lyons book "Forever Strong" and have read it cover to cover now a couple times. I'm 53, let myself get out of shape over the decades. Been working really hard for the last year trying to get back into shape with diet, resistance training, walking, and sprinting. It's never too late to start... I feel and look better now than I did when I was in my '20s and '30s.

I look at being strong and building muscle as a necessity. In order to keep up with daily routines, you need to be strong. In my case, I exercise 6 times a week usually 30 minutes a day, 2 upper body, 2 lower body, 2 aerobic. I use hand weights. Sugar is a thing of the past. Feel so amazing! BTW, I'm 72.

It feels like overhearing two experts on the sidelines of a conference having lunch. It's a delight that we, non-expert viewers, are treated to it 'in the raw' and not-watered-down. Super respectful and trusting of the creator(s) to infer, by putting it up unadulterated, 'You guys can handle this - I know you are smart enough to get the gist of our conversation and do your own research on terms and references you aren't familiar with'. It's one of many aspects that makes this YouTube channel so refreshing.

It’s hard to hear how this 1 (or 2) things (working out with weights or ‘going to the gym’) is the way to longevity for EVERYONE. There seams to be some important background wisdom missing before we start to consider if ‘heavy lifting’ is needed or not. I’m going to have to keep on listening to all these amazing cutting edge researchers that we are blessed to have with us on this wonderful planet for more background before rearranging my life around lifting, gyms and resistant training at the level that’s suggested here. It’s a great time to be alive. THANK YOU, YOU 2, FOR DEDICATING YOUR LIFE TO PROVIDING ACCESS FOR OTHERS TO LIVE A LIFE WORTH

This channel and it's exploratory teaching has been a major drive for me as I give back 50% of my weekly earning ($12, 000) to the sick old ones in my neighborhood. God bless America 🇺🇸

Muscle muscle….. all I need to hear about. What a pleasure to gain free and easily accessible knowledge thanks to technology. Am glad I recently have understood the most important aspect is muscle. I am 42 years old and I guess it’s perfect timing to change myself and think of future health.

Excellent podcast. Dr Lyon is able to make herself clearly understood - practical, easy-to-follow advice - despite the many annoying interruptions and change of focus from the host.

23 years in business and I work every single muscle in the body specifically to age while and be super strong. No one gets injured and it is super effective and efficient where no time is wasted. They get results fast and strength builds rather quickly, but I always start them where they are at in their health and strength.

I work with only with machines and weights only I do none of that other Boot Camp stuff but more importantly, I teach them how to feed those muscles and how to use nutrients to get the fan off reduce inflammation heal the gut, and feed those muscles and brain. It’s pretty much of an all inclusive course that I offer. Thanks for this great conversation. She’s great! I’m 59 years old and I don’t think I can ever possibly quit sharing my knowledge with people. I want to work out with you guys!

Thank you for this info. I’ve been “skinny fat” for 30 years and I have just started lifting in my mid 50s. I’m encouraged by the “it’s not too late” message. It’s more motivating to be consistent in the weight training knowing that building and maintaining muscle has so many more positive impacts.
