Soul Hackers 2[a] is an upcoming role-playing video game developed and published by Atlus. It is the sequel to Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers (1997) and the fifth installment of the Devil Summoner series, itself a part of the larger Megami Tensei franchise. It is planned to be released worldwide in August 2022 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S. Soul Hackers 2 takes place in the 21st century and is set during a war between the Yatagarasu and the Phantom Society, two opposing factions of Devil Summoners. The story follows two supernatural "Aion" beings named Ringo and Figue, who descend into the human world from their birthplace in the data stream of information, in order to avert a cataclysmic event that they predict will doom humanity. Soul Hackers 2 is a turn-based RPG that features a battle system derivative of the Press Turn system featured in the mainline Shin Megami Tensei games.[2] Battles involve a party of four characters and the element affinities present in other Megami Tensei titles. Characters take turns using a combination of physical attacks and magic Skills that summon demons to perform elemental attacks. Should the player manage to successfully exploit an enemy or enemy group's weakness to a particular Skill, they are able to perform a Skill known as "Sabbath", which targets every weakened enemy in battle and deals immense damage involving every active party member. It is conceptually similar to the "All-Out Attack" Skill that appears prominently in the Persona series. Additionally, demon encounters can alternatively be resolved through negotiation, allowing the party to raise said demon's enthusiasm for recruitment into their party. New demons can also be manually summoned by virtue of demon fusion, allowing two or more recruited demons to be fused together to summon a new demon type while carrying over selected or randomized Skills from either respective demon.

Another aspect carried over from the Persona games and Tokyo Mirage Sessions ♯FE (2015) is the implementation of light social simulation elements. Outside of battles, the player controls the main protagonist, Ringo, allowing her to freely roam around the main city setting and visit various landmarks such as shops to purchase and equip new clothing, armor, items and various weapons that can be used in battle. Additionally, the player can also elect to spend time with other party members outside of combat, strengthening their bonds and enabling specific abilities that can thereby be used between party members in combat.

I enjoyed the classic dungeon crawling style immensely. I know it's a call back to the old days but the chracters were more than enough to keep me coming back especially Saizo I dunno why but LOVE HIM!

People gotta stop expecting every Atlus game that releases to be their next big RPG that will dethrone Persona 5 in quality. They're a mid-size company with different teams working on different projects. Some of those projects will be experimental and this game just so happens to be that way.

"Bonkers" is pretty baseline for Atlus games, as far as story goes anyhow. In fact, I would argue that's part of what keeps us coming back for more.

Going inside the souls of your party, seems similar to the concept of the Ar Tonelico games.

SMT V didn't feel like a big budget game either, at least not on the story department. Usually the SMT games are kinda rough around the edges, but maybe that's part of the appeal. Some things that never disappoint in these games are the gameplay and music. The battle and fusion systems are pure gold.

They need to bring back the Raidou Devil Summoner series which is a action rpg to switch up the similar offerings between the shin megami games

Did you like SH1 on 3ds more or less than SH2?

I think I need this game. Its been 2-3 years when I finished Persona 5. SH2 gives that same vibe but in smaller package. 2 hours in, so lets see if I will change my mind later

Can someone tell me where I can find a link of the dungeons level requirement so that way I don't go over the level and I hate being overpower when fighting and I do farm alot so that's why i'm asking? I tryed looking online and videos but no one mention about it and i just want to be on the same level as the bosses and demons.

Thank you for the honest review. I am bummed by the boring dungeons, but I am glad the demon customization is as good as ever! Also you did a really good job explaining the systems to newcomers imo.

I never finished the first game but I always assumed the soul hackers came because you would do the vision quests from the fox and I know their was a virtual world in that game. How does the story from soul hackers 2 even come from that?

HMM I i wonder should i start on a higher difficulty than normal mode, based on this review

interesting that this got a 38/40 on famitsu almost matching up with P5 compared to your review. You'd think the bland dungeons would bring it down more than a couple points with famitsu.

They need to do something to make their games stand apart now. Maybe on gamepass I’ll play

Because of SMTV Im really skeptical of these persona spin offs. Just kidding but I hate that it feels like that is the case... Despite really hating SMT V story i still played a lot of it and enjoyed it

I’ll wait for a sale for this game since I haven’t beat SMT V yet and I’m not even close.

Very good review! As an atlus fan I was looking forward to it but I think I'll wait for a sale as I haven't even received my copy of Xenoblade Chronicles 3 yet, so I'll probably get it after that.

The dungeon designs in persona 4 left a lot to be desired but that game was still amazing.
