Elden Ring takes place in the realm of the Lands Between, sometime after the destruction of the titular Elden Ring and the scattering of its shards, the Great Runes. Once graced by the Ring and the Erdtree which symbolizes its presence, the realm is now ruled over by the demigod offspring of Queen Marika the Eternal, each possessing a shard of the Ring that corrupts and taints them with power. As Tarnished—exiles from the Lands Between who lost the Ring's grace and are summoned back after the Shattering, players must traverse the realm to ultimately find all the Great Runes, restore the Elden Ring, and become the Elden Lord. Elden Ring is an action role-playing game played in a third-person perspective with gameplay focusing on combat and exploration; it features elements similar to those found in other games developed by FromSoftware, such as the Souls series, Bloodborne, and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. Director Hidetaka Miyazaki explained that players start with a linear opening but eventually progress to freely explore the Lands Between, including its six main areas, as well as castles, fortresses, and catacombs scattered throughout the open world map. These main areas are interconnected through a central hub that players can access later in the game's progression—similar to Firelink Shrine from Dark Souls—and are explorable using the character's mount as the main mode of transport, although a fast travel system is an available option. Throughout the game, players encounter non-player characters (NPCs) and enemies alike, including the demigods who rule each main area and serves as the game's main bosses.
Combat in Elden Ring relies heavily on character-building elements found in previous Souls games and related intellectual properties, such as calculated and close-ranged melee-based combat with the use of skills, magic abilities, as well as blocking and dodging mechanics. Elden Ring introduces mounted combat and a stealth system, the latter being a core gameplay element from Sekiro; these features are expected to encourage players in strategizing their combat approach with each unique enemy they encounter. The game makes use of a player character stamina bar after being absent from Sekiro, although its overall influence over combat was reduced compared to previous FromSoftware games that utilized it. Unlike in Sekiro, resurrection mechanics after in-game death are not available; however, some elements were added to ensure players' progression within the game.

I really wish YouTubers would stop using the term "BRUTALLY HONEST" in reviews where the first thing they say is "THIS IS THE BEST GAME I'VE EVER PLAYED." That's like saying, "Look...I'm gonna be BRUTALLY honest with won the lottery. I'm so, so sorry...."

From what I hear it’s more fun than DS or Sekiro because of the open world. So if you aren’t ready for a boss you can explore and do something else. This may make things more bearable.

Personally I love souls games, played everything from demon souls to sekiro to nioh 2. Definitely had some bosses that Ive hit my head against but I feel like my brain is just wired when I play these games and im quite good but I have a buddy that loves souls games but he hates playing them. These games arent for everyone but if you mesh with it, its gonna take over you.

Never trust a youtubers opinion on a game before launch, they always hide the problems so we can all spend our money on broken games, I fell for it with cyberpunk and almost fall for it with this, what saved my money was the reviews on steam...

Many years ago, think when skyrim first came out, i asked a few friends how good would darksouls be in a open world environment like skyrim. Years later its here. My dream has been fulfilled

I've always shied away from Souls games due to the difficulty and boss battles, but Elden Ring convinced me to take the plunge. Wish me luck! :)

I share your sentiment friend. I just can't believe they exceeded even my wildest expectations! I wish more studios were as good as FS and could make games this interesting fun and capturing! I need more gaming experiences this good more often. It sucks waiting 3 years for it. I hope they continue Elden Ring as a series or just build many expansions into it at least. I do need Bloodborne 2 though at some point. They just need to stick with this formula it's too perfect. I can't live without a FS game on the horizon at all times!

Offhand. I notice that From Software Souls esque games (ar/ Demon Souls, Sekiro and Blooborne) build on each other in one way or another. I played Demon Souls and I see how far From Software has come.

I've played most of Fromsofts games from Armored core, to Dark Souls and I'm stoked for this. I'm glad a lot of new people will play this but, I really wish people would also play their past works, some are difficult, but a lot of games used to be (Blood, Quake, even to tmnt turtles in time lol). Welcome to the souls community people, if you get good at this you'll be better at every game you play and the patience and focus the game gives you will also benefit you more than you know.
