Spinal Decompression Surgery - Explained by Dr. Kevin Ju

Dr. Kevin Ju, explains what decompression surgery is and who would be a good candidate. So, what is Decompression Surgery?
Any surgery that relieves compression of the spinal cord or spinal nerves is considered to be decompression surgery. If the compression results from a disc herniation, the surgery is a discectomy. If the compression is because of a narrowed spinal canal that is placing pressure on the spinal cord or nerve roots, this surgery is a laminectomy. A laminectomy removes the back wall of the spinal canal to create more space for the spinal cord.

This is a very well explained video. The UK has many issues with the NHS but we are so fortunate to have amazing talented doctors and wonderful treatments/operations to correct nerve compression . The best thing of all is that its all free. Plus top end care.

Dr. Kevin Ju, thanks for the informative video. What is the best analysis to determine the cause for excruciating lower back pain? Would an MRI on the spine is suggested? I do not feel any numbness or problems in my legs. Thanks in advance for your help.

Im dealing with this bullshit back injury. I get sciatica and numbness in both legs alternating. It's depressing as hell. I can't even work and have to take time off. If i knew surgery could fix my issue, I would say hell yeah.

i have both lateral recesses impinged !! i have a broad disc bulge causing it. i don’t really care for the disk itself to be cut as i assume it will just bulge again, would my options be looking at shaving the bone instead to give them more room?

Doc I have L4L5 disc prolapse. My doctor is planning for decompression ASAP. Im really scared and has asked for some time. But that is the only treatment left, as all the conservative management including neurobion and aggressive physiotherapy have failed. I can barely walk now. Cramps and numbness are owning my body. What must I do. Im only 48

can compression actually be the result of back surgery? I had a disc blow out and a Discectomy as a result. Over 10 years ago. Have been dealing with a numb right foot (bottom only, about 1/2 the foot) and numbness on the back of my right leg ever since. I didn't have any of this numbness prior to the surgery. So, clearly something is pressing against a nerve. just not sure if, after 10 years, anything can be done.
