I used to have a REALLY hard time spending money on myself. REALLY hard time. I came from a job that helped billionaires give millions into the developing world (so for the benefit of people living on $2 or less/day). It kind of paralyzed me in spending on myself. I wanted to be like the billionaires to be able to give lavishly, but I wasn't there. I also felt guilty spending on myself because I was aware of the great need others were in. Some things that helped me was making sure I had the flexibility to give and having a designated blow fund for myself. By giving I knew I was helping others who had great need. For spending on myself, I actually had to intentionally force myself to spend my blow fund. I needed to do this until I could spend and not feel guilty. Now I'm pretty chill about things, but it took work to move through the guilt to say - we set a budget. We can spend this much in these categories. Now feel free to go use the categories appropriately.

We do very well and are approaching retirement in a few years. 4 more house payments. We have had a Jeep for the past 30 years and used to take the kids to the mountains when they were young camping and exploring. The kids still talk about those adventures. It was not overly expensive to do, but the memories will last a lifetime. When I retire, the latest Jeep is set up for extended cross country travel. Plan to visit the Pacific Northwest, British Columbia, and possibly on up into Alaska. It is tough to go from savings mode to spending mode, but our numbers make sense and we know we can do this.

Great advice! I have the home improvement and gardening bug. It takes money to support that hobby but it brings me joy and fits within my budget, so there’s no reason to feel guilty!

How about putting a % that makes sense into your budget that you don't have to stress over.

I'm 31 years old. I basically save everything I earn after paying expenses. I'm not a materialistic person, I just don't like having a bunch of "stuff". I have the problem of not knowing what to spend my money on. Is more of a blessing than a curse?

I'm a minimalist. I see the American culture of buying crap and being wasteful as repulsive. When you die, all the crap you bought is going to go to the dump or resold anyway. I invest and save 50 percent of my income so I can get the hell out of the corporate wage slavery.

Yep, I am retired and debating with myself on buying a Toy. A fat tire folding Ebike($=48 hours of labor). It wouldn't make a dent in my budget. BUT!!!! I have to put it in my mind. That my children don't need or want my money.
