Burn more calories on the rower by SLOWING DOWN!

For those that aren’t experienced with using a rowing machine properly, they think that faster = more calories.

The “speed” of your rowing, aka the “stroke rate” is simply a measure of the rhythm of how many strokes you’re taking in… NOT HOW HARD YOU ARE TAKING STROKES!

To make rowing burn a lot of calories and actually feel like a good workout, you need to take strokes HARDER, and NOT row “faster”!

Rowing machines generate resistance based on how much EFFORT goes into the drive of each stroke. You could have a stroke rate of 30 strokes per minute, but if you’re not putting EFFORT into each stroke, you’re doing a whole lot of NOTHING! Hence the 700 calories per hour that happens when I just bounce up and down with no actual effort.

By slowing your stroke rate / rhythm down, you can actually get a better workout on the rower because you can focus on your form, but more importantly, putting more EFFORT into each stroke! That’s why you can see that at 20 strokes per minute, I can burn 2 times as many calories because I’m actually TRYING HARD each stroke - even though the rate is lower!

Start rowing SLOW if you ACTUALLY want to get in a good workout on the rower! 💪 Questions? Ask them!

Love always,

Coach Austin 🤘

Thanks for this. I have found when I'm really into the tunes my stroke rate kicks up 30-31 and I can go for days but if I focus on my form and lean back more my rate drops to the mid 20's and I start getting winded.

Depends what you want to achieve. Rowing slow is not very engaging, or exciting. I always challenged myself to a 20 minute 5k. You have to go!

I would just like to add that he is totally right! And that’s not just for rowing, but any lift or exercise. If you slow down and focus on control and muscle tension, you actually work your muscles MORE than going fast! Stay on that grind everyone!💪

Yeah, me on Monday wondering why it didn't even feel like a workout. Rowers are overrated? Nope, just doing it wrong lol

There's no way you are burning most of your daily calorie intake in 1 hour no matter what exercise you are doing lol. I feel like the reading is way off. I do trust the actual calorie burned meter though. Usually I do like 100 calories after 30 mins of going solid

would have been good to have the force curve on the moniter to highlight effect of good technique.

Hey Coach, what’s the drag factor used in your video?

Coach, what's your split in there, having up to 1480 cal/h?

What's your best 2km time on the Concept 2 rower?

I get it but my heart rate monitor indicates that the calories burnt by running, skipping or doing burpees is significantly higher than with rowing at whichever pace or intensity I may be working at... and yes, I am pushing hard on the rower because there is a time when I simply have to rest or lower the pace/intensity to be able to carry on... Any thoughts on this?

My go-to workout recently has been as follows:

5k: first and 3rd 1k at steady 27/spm, 2nd and 4th k power 10’s at around 25/spm, last 1k is steady at 27/spm for first 500m and an all out balls-to the wall sprint for the final 500m. Hoping to get sub 20 5k and sub 7 2k 💪🏻

Pulling 1400 cals at 20 strokes is 1.2 calories per stroke - most people can't pull that hard for more than a couple of strokes....

What level should you normally row at ???
Thanks in advance

Usually I got 26 spm using a cable resistance equal to 10. And my calories numbers are 180 or 150 ( in between) with, 20 minutes rowing.its good or not?

Novice rower here, do you do anything different with your form or just focus on making the drive and finish near max effort?

Man im so bored of rowing.. i think maybe i need a stationary bike at home to change it up some

Curious what resistance you set your erg to to achieve that kind of calorie burn at a 20 stroke rate.

You have to be doing more work, so (never actually used one myself) you have to be pulling farther and or harder. Looks like harder.

C'mon...it's using more power per pull generating more output in watts. Don't be misleading in the video.
