Walking Is Better Than Running For Fat Loss

Why would walking be better than running for fat loss? This is not a conversation about the cardiovascular benefits of running, which there certainly are. This discussion is about using moderate intensity steady state, running or jogging, as a means to lose and maintain low body fat. Though you will burn more calories during a jog than a walk there are some other reasons that I feel walking is a superior method for fat loss. This is not about hormones, this is about how we can setup our lives with a diet and exercise plan to maintain a healthy physique and mindset.

I'm watching this for the first time.... Talk about affirmation.

On 20 September, 2019 I started walking on a daily basis. Started out 1.5 miles.... then 2. Now I average 3.5 every day (that's what I can fit in to my schedule).

It's been about 3.5 months now and I've lost 30 pounds. No crazy diets and magic pills. Hell I didn't even count calories... I just tried to eat smart and responsible. I went from 250lbs to 219 and I'm still going.

I went from 275 to 160lbs in 14 months, walking 12k steps a day, every day. I also had a 16/8 hour fasting regimen… still walking every day and I feel great!

Running for 20 minutes gets me out off a lazy mindset and motivates me to keep working out. I run and then I get excited to do weights and ab exercises. It also forces me out of my comfort zone of being a couch potato. Just do what makes you happy and what you can do consistently. I also love to just walk for a few miles and listen to music. Just don't ever stop moving and don't take your health for granted.

Thank goodness because running makes me want to gouge my eyes out with a spoon

I like walking more because you can turn it in to a social thing with your gf or friend.

I always feel lighter, fitter and looked slimmer everytime I come back from a vacation that requires plenty of walking around spread throughout the day.

Think about how many books you can listen to walking one hour a day.

Hippocrates was spot-on when he said “Walking is a man's best medicine” – as research has demonstrated it's effectiveness in everything from reducing blood pressure and inflammation, to improving memory and cognitive function to increasing lifespan.

When I do a heavy amount of cardio like running it seems to make me very hungry and I tend to eat more which defeats the purpose

Completely agree with you! I'm a cyclist and I cycle a lot. I also walk nearly every day. 12 months ago I swapped my walking sessions for running sessions keeping everything else the same. I got a little fat! What! So I went back to walking and maybe running once a week and I'm back to my lean self.

What I learned:
Walking is better than running for burning fat.

Walking is definitely the most underated exercise. I love it, it's amazing 🤗 Thank you for this information.

I totally agree, long distance fast walking is better than running especially if you want to stay healthy with no side effects as you get older.

I lost 20 lbs effortlessly in a year after I started using a treadmill desk without changing my diet or workout routine much. Walking is definitely awesome.

First let me say that this is a great video Paul. Love it. I am an avid runner. I love to run. Despite the minor injuries I get, all athletes will get injured at some point when they take their sport seriously. I find I get depressed when I don't run for a week or more. It really screws me up. Maybe one of the unmentioned benefits to running is the mental aspect. During a long run, I'm able to sort out the shit fay that I just had. I get back to my car after a few miles on the trails and I feel euphoric.

Thank you for not shooting down the sport.

I always thought I needed to run as the main means to cardio and fat burn. Boy was I wrong. At the age of 57 this year I have gone from a bulging mid-section to a flat stomach walking 3.4 to 4.0km on a treadmill for 3 months (6% incline). I have combined this with some moderate weightlifting, with focus on form and avoiding injury. My goal in the next three months is to target single digit body fat with walking as my primary means of fat burn. Walking has provided me the most sustainable and efficient means of fat loss that I have ever experienced throughout my many years of exercise.

I walk with intermittent runs. What I mean by that is I will walk for 15 minutes and then run for 5, then walk for 10 minutes and then run for 3 minutes. This is all in a very hilly area. Seems to work for me.

I'm 5'8". I recently dropped from 227 lbs to 180 lbs in 6 months without exercising much. I felt so light and great at 180 that I began running again. I ran three fast half marathons in a two-week period, then suddenly gained weight. My next half marathon one month later was an hour slower, and I continued to gain. Over the next six months, I gained 14 lbs, back up to 194 lbs. Since I've committed to avoiding this sort of intense exercise, I've dropped back down to 183 in just six weeks. I think the issue with running is that if your exercise makes you much hungier than what you burned, you'll overeat, and if your exercise is unpredictable, your body will hang on to fat because it doesn't know what's coming next. I think running is okay of you're running the same amount every week and measuring your food, but I agree here that it's not the best for weight loss. Also, if you're eating correctly, then add walking and taking stairs, it will actually help you get into a calorie deficit because it won't stimulate your appetite any more than usual or cause an injury, like mentioned in the video.
