Are We SAVED By Faith AND Works?

Is it faith alone, or faith plus works that get us to heaven? Let's take a look.

Faith without works is dead in James 2 simply means that true faith will lead to good works, but not that good works play any part in actually saving you.

True saving faith does indeed produce good works, but it’s the work of the Holy Spirit not man.

Ephesians 2:8-10 (ESV)
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

James and Paul are writing about justification from two different perspectives. They don’t contradict each other at all. James writes about justification from men. He’s writing to hypocrites who claim to have faith but refuse to help the poor. In the eyes of men, faith appears dead without works. Paul writes about justification from God. His audience is Jews who are adding works to grace. In God’s eyes none of us are good, the most righteous among us is a filthy rag. In God’s eyes, we are only justified by faith in Christ and His finished work on the cross.

James 2:14-26

*14* What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? *15* Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. *16* If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed, ” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? *17* In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.

*18* But someone will say, “You have faith; I have deeds.”

Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds. *19* You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that—and shudder.

*20* You foolish person, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless[d]? *21* Was not our father Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? *22* You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did. *23* And the scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness, ”[e] and he was called God’s friend. *24* You see that a person is considered righteous by what they do and not by faith alone.

*25* In the same way, was not even Rahab the prostitute considered righteous for what she did when she gave lodging to the spies and sent them off in a different direction? *26* As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.

From what I understand, and I could be wrong, people are saying the same thing in different ways.

One group says, true faith will result in obedience and therefore works, but obedience and works are not necessary for salvation only faith, but "true" faith will have someone obedient etc.

While the other group says, yes you must have faith to be saved, but your faith should get you to be faithful and obedient, which sometimes is a conscious effort to deny yourself/desires/flesh BASED on your already existing faith to provide the energy and momentum for it.

I don't think God, Jesus, Paul, James or Peter imagined a faith that didn't result ultimately in obedience and therefore works. It is clear though, that God thinks that faith is the spring and root for salvation and obedience. the greater the faith the greater the obedience is sort of the Bible's viewpoint. Unbelief would = disobedience in actions.

What about those people that say "I can do what ever i want cuz Jesus died for us, and i really think it was kind of him but i will still do what ever i want"

We are saved by grace. Faith and works are responses to this grace.

We as humans will determine if someone has faith by their profession of faith alone and works but regardless only God truly knows if that person has faith no matter if they work or not because there are people who do the works but don’t actually believe in faith alone salvation.

I can't be on board with this. Good faith should bring good works, not the other way around, and we shouldn't let the left hand know what the right hand is doing. The works should just be done regardless of how you feel about it. James said faith alone without works is dead... I think believing in sola fide is a dangerous slippery slope. Not everyone who says Lord Lord, will be granted heaven. This idea opens the doors to living your life however you want in your flesh so long as you trust in Jesus. Obviously none of us can do what Jesus did, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't do good things for people. Are you saying we shouldn't love our neighbor? We shouldn't have charity (highest form of love)?

I would really love to see you have a discussion with an Atheist on why they don't believe, I think it could be very interesting. Please let me know how to get in on a live call, I'd love to be that Atheist.

Yeah but Jesus said in matthew 7:21 you have to do his will to enter heaven so its by faith initially but if you dont follow it with works your faith is dead as the book of James says.
