Letting Go Of Resentment (Stoic & Buddhist perspectives)

Very recently, life taught me another lesson about resentment. And that letting go of resentment is actually a lot easier than the mind makes us believe. I’d like to share with you what I’ve learned, accompanied by a Stoic as well as Buddhist perspective. Some (useless) trivia: the place in 0:19 is the same place as in 3:21, but exactly 6 months and 5 days a part. What a complete metamorphosis, right?

Cuts, script, footage, voice by Einzelgänger. I've used creative commons (links below) and some public domain material (links available upon request).

*_Resentment doesn't change the heart of others it only changes yours..._*

I have learned from my life experience that nobody is responsible to give me happiness or peace of mind. I have to do it for me not my family, friends or my girl nobody. All of them can change my mood momentarily but stability in my emotions is only my responsibility.

I need to hear this. Resentment is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die!

Resentment is a very powerful emotion, sometimes even more powerful than love. When you truly feel resentment towards even one person, it makes it hard to feel love and trust anybody at all😞

Ironically resentment seems to surface more regarding those we love because the mistreatment hurts more when it comes from them. But you're right; resentment isn't healthy. Gotta be set free.

This is honestly my biggest problem, it’s so damn hard for me to let things go or to forgive people,

Expectations of others is just resentment in the waiting. Stand up for yourself and let the chips fall where they may but choose your battles carefully. Sometimes it's just not worth it nor does it have a positive impact.

I enjoy something I heard first from Joel Osteen and since then from other speakers. “Forgive them and move on. BUT, remember, you’re not forgiving to make them feel better, it’s to make your life better so you can move on with your life”

Resentment is an endless loop of anger going over and over in the mind. Stems from a lack of power over a situation or cause

I'm trying to let go any resentment I have for others. It is a lot, because I hold it for years. It's a horrible situation when my brain keep repeating those bad times and ended up my body getting sick of it, physically and mentally.

Having compassion towards your family and letting go and still loving them doesn’t erase the feeling or the hurt we feel.

This is exactly what I discovered: I am not necessarily angry at the other, but angry at my own unsovereign behavior.

Sometimes the family connection dynamic, that we all seem to value, may actually have to be severed in order to move forward and grow. Dishoning toxic people is not unusual in life, but is often seen as a taboo or even immoral to do for family members... Getting over that hurdle is difficult, but if you want to build and progress, one should NOT endure emotional abuse for the sake of blind loyalties of any kind...

I think we're at a similar place in our journeys, brother.

What helped me is to put music meditation nad write in a paper evrything you resent. That truly was healing because you put your distance in that thoughts and then you ripp off the paper and you are free. Trust me it worked. I was so full so resentment that i wasn't able to focus. I was fed up by bein fed up of being resentful.

I believe stoicism comes with age. Learning who you are and what virtues lead your path comes from many trails we have passed.
I have been too preoccupied with getting through life to realise the virtues that are important to me until recently and through stoicism are understanding why I have failed at personal relationships with family & friends. I can't help but be lead by my virtues as they are all I have apart from my health.

I'm going through a lawsuit from my siblings for my crime of taking care of my father when they completely abandoned him. Accusing me of mismanaging funds when in fact they added value to his estate. It's broken my heart, I miss them, we're destroyed because of their emotions. This series has put me back together. Thank you Eizelganger.

Thank you so much. My mum is from the Netherlands and passed away recently. All my life, she was the only person who used the phrase “pulling dead cows out of the ditch.” I enjoy your videos not just for the life-changing philosophical lessons but also because I find your accent comforting, since it’s like my mum’s. 🇳🇱 🇺🇸
