It's funny because for myself my traps blew up from heavy barbell shrugs in the 6-10 rep range. With controlled reps and slow eccentrics my traps have grown substantially. When I go lighter with DBs and higher reps I don't feel the same activation as with the barbell.

Rotate your shoulders back and and pause at the top and squeeze is what I do and I can guarantee you will feel it . Well you already know but for someone who does not, give it a try, try everything but squeeze the last cpl reps so you can feel it .

I did shrougs n up-right rows for years n got good results but my traps really took off when i started doing hang cleans n power cleans as functional sports specific training for my sports. I can only guess it was the fast, powerful action that starts as both a shrug and an up-right row that caused the growth in the fast twitch fibers of my traps.
