DIY Garage Storage Shelves | Shed Shelves: Strong, Easy and Cheap

There’s a ton of storage shelves plans out there for your garage, workshop or shed that rely solely on screws to hold up the shelves, but we’re going to be packing these shelving units with some heavy tools and equipment so we came up with a robust, heavy duty build that will stand the test of time and did NOT break the bank.

The whole unit is made of 2x4’s, OSB and some wood glue and 2 1/2 inch deck screws. It took only a few hours to build and stick around to the end of the video to find out how much it cost compared to a pre-made unit of inferior quality.

Absolutely LOVE the simplicity of this build! As an newbie looking to build out my first shelf this is perfect. One little finishing touch I plan on putting on mine are locking wheels so I can move these shelves around as needed whenever we want/need to rearrange the layout.

The Jack studs supporting your shelf frames are smart. The shelf frames themselves I see can be rearranged later to different height configurations by merely resizing the Jack stud lengths (just use screws in lieu of glue for that option). Heavy duty. Adaptable. Nice 👍

First Class Presentation! I have been intending to organise the contents of my garage for some time, but kept delaying the work, as it became more cluttered, and assembling products on sale were not ideal, or too costly. However your excellent clip brought home some practical instructions on tackling the task, and the project work has finally been put in my diary to secure the required / advised items, and time. Thank you!

Sturdy!
Overkill, but, good stuff!
The OSB won't sag.

These look like pretty good shelves, but I don't think the liquid nails or glue on the legs is necessary. There is nothing that will tend to pull the OSB from the frames, and there is nothing that will pull the supports from the legs. The unit would be just as strong if it were just screwed together, and in the future, when you decide to change things up ( like we all do ) it would come apart easily and the materials could be reused.

It looks great.... Just a little more effort and cost than necessary.

This is definitely the style of shelving I’m looking for. Since it’s only going into a storage unit, I would appreciate your “plans” so I can build the same. Thanks in advance.

I love these DIY videos that use so many specialist tools. Ironic.

Would there be a structural difference between putting the legs on the outside vs the front and back?

I think this would definitely work for my storage needs. I’m a first time beginner. Would you mind sharing your plans?

Did you secure them to the studs once in place to prevent tipping or racking?

I keep seeing this design. And I can't help think it's way over engineered.
I thought of building something like this, and ended up buying a flimsy solution from Ikea, that is less than a 1x3. And it holds up fairly well.
How much cheaper would a 1x4 single layer post design have been?
