I’ve got a shelf like that in my garage. I used drywall screws as it’s all I had. 15 years later it’s got about a million lbs in it and still holding strong

I bet you're really proud of your shelf.

Now imagine all the grandfathers that built their shelves before these fasteners existed and they are still holding up hundreds of tin coffee cans of unsorted nuts bolts and screws for decades. Still standing just fine. Lol

I use 4x4's for uprights and notch them for the 2x4's. The weight rests on wood, not screws.

The grk screws are very under rated. I use them in commercial and industrial environment all the time with no problems what so ever

Built these last weekend. Solid. Easy. Great design. Thanks for the videos.

Or run 2x4 blocks under each shelf and transfer the load directly to the ground.

IIRC, the screws provide clamping pressure, the sheer strength actually comes from the friction between the shelf and the support. Physics is wild

As it is now, your shelves are on stilts supported only by the sheer strength of those screws. You need jack beams on each of those stilts to transfer the load via compression to the ground. Same with the back wall for that matter.

I built shelves like that 27 years ago with drywall screws, no problem yet.

Overkill unless your building for somebody else. 3” drywall screws are very strong 4 per connection

Good job doing the research, Us old folk had to try it and see. I learned nails will bend, Screws will break. Keep it up.

Screws are screws, if they fit it sticks. If you worried about shear, put some extra screws in it.

Sounds like he got a bunch of over engineer, haters comments on his original build. You hang in there my friend, that was an excellent job.

I used another 2x4 stacked between the shelves at every support leg.

This is a much less expensive and faster technique with the cost of lumber, unless you can do some jobsite poaching.

Looks good man! Good job

I'd still use 2x4s to transfer weight to the floor. You do what you want.

People are also missing the fact that the screws are not taking all the load in sheer, some of it is shared by the friction of the wood itself. The same as wheel studs on a vehicle, the studs are in tension and the "sheer" is mostly carried by the friction between the wheel and the hub.
