Garage Workshop Shelves for $20

These are the least expensive free-standing shelves I could some up with that were still worth building. The project took me about 2 hours to build 16 feet of shelves. These shelves measure 96″ wide by 18″ deep by 75″ tall. They will safely hold 200lbs per shelf or more.

Total cost $36.63 for the 8' section or under $19 per 4′ section, which is how you would buy them from the store.

I built these five years ago and they've helped up well. No sagging. I'm only back on this video to remind myself of the build process. I'm adapting the general idea for a smaller version in a basement pantry.

Good tip about the 4 x4's being cheaper and having less warp from the outset. Elegantly simple, and great explanations, pace, voice. Not sure why this channel is not more popular. Truly excellent demo, many thanks! I plan to make garage shelving. THANK YOU FOR NO MUSIC!!!

Nicely done. Love how you used increased playback speed and voice over. I never thought of ripping 2x4's to save cost...great idea.

Wow, thank you so much - have a smaller type utility room and this will be perfect. The cost for metal shelves is considerably higher and I bet not as sturdy. Also, it's great for you to provide the plans. Take care - Stan.

Thanks for the video and design. I am going to use it! Just noticed looking at it a 2nd time, you have a propane tank and BBQ indoors!

I like that this video/ project use tools most diy hobbyist have. A video series of projects with tools that are more accessible for diy would be interesting to watch. Just a suggestion as someone with limited tools to use for projects, love the videos and inspiration to start my own projects. 2:39

I like this design because all the joints are crosses and you are always putting screws across the grain of all the pieces of wood you're joining. I'm convinced this makes everything much stronger. I know many people are fine using butt joints on shelves: putting a screw or nail through one piece of wood crossways and into the end face of another piece ( along the grain) - they look sleeker but I just don't trust butt joints over time on shelves when I might be putting lots of heavy things on them. So this is a simple, elegant but very strong design.

Excellent point on finding straight 2x2 vs ripping fairy straight 2x4 lumber. Not to mention price. Good call.

so happy to hear you say that it was hard to find 1x2s that are straight. went to home depot the other day for a project and literally spent 25 mins finding straight ones. i live in a small apartment in chicago so i don't really have the space for a table saw.

Man, this is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks so much for posting. Cost effective and sturdy. Looking to make this. I'm just hoping they got some straight 2 by 4's that are straight since I don't have a table saw.... Wish me luck.

Thanks for this vid. With 2x4's at $7, this will save me a lot of money. I'm really concerned about sagging on the furring strip shelf supports though. Will probably go with 2x2's
