Just watched a few videos of similar garage shelving projects. This one provides the most practical approach to install the whole thing by a one-person team. It also allows for checking the shelves are level. Well done!

Mike, thank you so much for your tutorial! I completed this project in 2 days and with a little bit more than 12 feet to work with (I just shortened the workbench to 4 feet). I've never constructed anything outside of IKEA furniture, never used a circular or miter saw, and the simplicity of this project, along with the drawings and thorough instructions made it relatively easy to accomplish. Thanks again!

Built mine and it turned out great! I did take note of the comments below me regarding the need for stronger reinforcement. I have concrete walls in my garage, so i used concrete anchors to hold the back support frame. I used lag bolts where the shelf frames attach to the upright supports, in addition to screws. I bolted on relatively small pieces of 2x4 to the uprights, touching the bottom of each support frame to give more support. I'm convinced it's quite strong than enough, to support the items on my shelf, which include a heavy brick wetsaw and a compound mitre saw. Thanks for the inspiration!

This gave me confidence to build it alone without help! Loved it. Keep up the great work! Videos are concise... no BS, appreciate how you fast forwarded some repeating sections! Thank you! Subbed!

Pretty sweet storage solution! I would however suggest adding a 2x4 to the front of the 2x4 shelf supports in the middle where the two sides meet to splint the shelf.

Excellent video. Just finished my storage unit and it turned out great. I was so inspired by the video that I even bought the same mitre saw, driver, and HDX tubs.
My project was 12’ wide and 10’ high.

This turned out great! I’m planning something similar for an attic storage project I’ve got coming up.

I did a similar project about a year ago in this same style, down to the color/size of the plastic totes. Since I only planned on stacking totes on the shelves, I just ran 2x4s instead of laying MDF. I ended up making a rolling workbench that fits right into the shelving unit with leftover scrap. Everything is stored in a labelled tote. Nothing is just tossed up on the shelf. People walking by when my garage door is open walk up to compliment he arrangement all the time.

Simple and efficient. I am going to do this my new house. Because I have a ton of projects that have lot of boxes the workbench is plus

I built this same rack/shelf in 2011, but much bigger, I used osb and metal brackets on 2×4, and recycled countertop for work bench...still looks great and keeps organization

Great plans and video. I had to make several modifications due to size of garage and ceiling height, but turned out excellent. 8 Costco bins wide and added a plywood workbench area. Only recommendation for real world is the flat shelving pieces. That particle board isn't cheap, so I made do with what I had and some pieces didn't end on 2x4's. Solution was either to add perpendicular 2x4's in with pocket holes on back end or simply go parallel to existing supports. Added about 3 total supports. Looks awesome!

How about a short purpose built ladder at a slight angle to the 2nd highest shelf that hooks and slides along a small aluminum J channel along the front edge? Like an old style library ladder that can be removed and hooked out of the way around the left side there.

Today we used your video and plans as a basis to build a half sized version of your plan. I originally bought all of the materials you describe for the 16' wide monster but found it wasn't suitable for my garage in our new home. So instead we decided to go with a modified approach with just a single 8' span and a 4' workspace. We also had to make some tweaks to accommodate electrical outlets and other site specific constraints but in the end I couldn't be happier with the results. I hope this gives you inspiration to keep on doing more DIY instructional videos because it really helped us with our hope to build some awesome garage storage shelving for our new house.

👍👌 I did sort of the same method in my closet few years ago, the only difference is that I chopped up old shelf unit into five shelves and attached to wood frame I created. Did the job as it filled whole width and from floor to ceiling. Oh and it's free standing as it an rental property. 🙂

Man this was perfect timing. I'm getting a shed tomorrow and I think a scaled-down version of this will be a perfect storage solution.
