Back Pain Linked to Knee Pain

Many people struggle with knee pain but health experts say that pain you’re having may actually be caused by a back problem.

Neal Trottier, a physical therapist with Lee Memorial Health System, says aches and sharp knee pains can be a symptom of a back problem. “A lot of patients will say I don’t have a back problem. I didn’t even have any back pain.”

In many cases, Trottier says, patients have a pinched nerve in the lower back causing pain in their knees. “It’s because the nervous system and the nerves actually travel down to your legs, especially coming from the low back. If there’s a nerve that’s compressed you may not feel the back pain, you may not feel the pain where the actual problem is. A lot of times you will feel it extend down the leg.”

If the patient has both knee and back pain, Trottier says the treatment will focus on strengthening the patient’s posture, flexibility, and core. “For back pain in general we tend to work a lot on core strength. Your core muscles, not only your abdominals but your hip muscles, your back muscles, they’re very important to strengthen and support the spine,” said Trottier.

Physical therapy may also address the knee pain with light exercises. “Sitting and standing out of a chair, doing some light mini squats, and things where you’re putting weight through your joints,” said Trottier.

Other activities like water aerobics and walking on soft surfaces can also help manage the pain. “Usually if it’s painful it’s probably not the right thing to do. It’s your body’s way of telling you it’s time to stop,” said Trottier. He says other ways to help with the pain are stretching, over the counter pain relief, and resting. Over time the pain typically gets better.

This just happened to me the past week. Swelling in my knee and unable to add weight. Then there was a sharp pain near my meniscus. I thought my knee was done but i decided to lift myself out of my desk chair today and hang my body. CRACK* My back decompress and cracked in 3-4 spots and instantly felt relief in my knee. I also started getting a dull pain in my hip as well while walking. Now i feel like going to the gym and going for a walk.

Please, if you have lower back pain, especially with pain going down your leg, don't lean over forward and touch your toes or the floor as shown in this video. That could very easily make your condition much worse. I should know. I was dumb enough to do those stretches thinking they would help my lower back pain. All those stretches do is irritate the problem area and possibly herniate your discs (L4/L5 for sure) even further. There are many back stretches and exercises that are so much safer and more effective.

after getting a painful pinched nerve that wouldn't go away at all where i could barely stand up, sit or lay down without feeling pain I did a research on a cure. It turns out I had actually gotten a pinched nerve. Though I was bending backwards that was making the problem more worse. The cure was simply to bend down forward as far as possible while standing or sitting with your legs out. Most videos informed to bend your spine backwards but the trick is to bend your spine forward as far as possible by either standing up and bending down as far as possible or by sitting down opening your legs and than bending down reaching towards the floor just your spine and torso.
Side back note. Had gone to doctor and they did x rays and said nothing was wrong prescribed some advil and that was it and they referred me to chiropractor but i wasn't doing this so i researched online and found out it was simply a pinched nerve. I knew I hadn't injured my back seriously because i had lifted a medium box and the prior nights had been dancing. There was no way it was a broken disc or herniated disc or torn muscle but a annoying pinched nerve. Now i'm 100 percent pain free. I was immediately cured and felt the nerve go back into its place near my spine.
Hope that helps out a lot of people. It also may depend on how you moved the pinched nerve in the first place but either bend your back forward as far as possible but if that doesn't work try bending it back or side ways.
By bending backwards you really can't stretch your nerves out because your back can bend as much as you would if you bent forward.

In 2019 I had a torn Meniscus operation on my left knee(surgery repair the meniscus). I continued to have inner knee pain. During a follow up appointment the assistant nurse informed me they had to dislocate my left need to remove the bucket tear from my knee joint. I’ve been dealing with the pain to date, as a result I’ve favored my left knee while walking. I now have severe lower back pain. What can I do to relieve the back pain?

I recommend a knee pillow, I got mine from PostureSuperior.com you put it in between your knees, and it aligns your spine while you sleep, works very well!
