Let’s talk about why you might experience digestive problems when you break a long fast and how to help prevent these digestive problems.  

Digestive issues you could experience after breaking a prolonged fast:
• Diarrhea 
• Loose stool 
• Gas 
• Abdominal pain 
• Bloating 
• Nausea 

This could happen because, basically, your digestive system has gone to sleep, and it hasn’t woken up yet. You don’t want to eat a large meal after a long fast because you will overload your system. You need to start small. 

If you’ve done a fast for 48-72+ hours, the best thing to do would be to start with some cooked vegetables and broth. Then you would want to wait for two hours and then consume 3 oz. of protein that’s easy to digest, like fish, chicken, or an egg. You could also do a small amount of avocado. 

After a long fast, you may also want to take certain things, such as:
• Apple cider vinegar (ACV) or betaine hydrochloride 
• Bile salts 
• Enzymes 
• Probiotics 

Foods to avoid after a long fast:
• Nuts and nut butters
• Red meat 
• Raw cruciferous vegetables 
• Dairy products 

There is also a condition called refeeding syndrome, which is very rare. This could occur if you were deficient in certain electrolytes, then you did 1-2 weeks of fasting, and then you ate a refined carbohydrate or high sugar food. 

This will spike insulin, which can cause electrolyte deficiencies in your blood. This can lead to feeling weak and confused and can even create a big strain on your heart about 3 hours later. You can avoid this problem by not having a high-carb meal and by taking certain electrolytes and nutrients during your fast.

I recommend breaking your fast with Bone Broth or Lean Chicken or fish. Then have your meal 1hr later. Also siping on green tea during your fast will greatly help you.

I just ended a long fast today. Remarkable timing. A little diarrhea never hurt anyone. That's my only symptom. But that's over now.

I've been following you and Dr Ekbergs advice and I lost 20lbs. I always had a sweet tooth and my weight was only getting worse. It finally dawned on me that I really need to do something. I've been fasting for a little over 6 weeks and couldn't seem to get more than 17 lbs off so I just finished a 48hr fast and I could've went longer. Hi Dr Eric, yes you are helping me IMMENSELY! Since February I have lost 33 pounds fasting and intermittent fasting. In February I went on a 5 day fast and this month I just got off of an 8 day fast. During my off days I do 18/6 intermittent fasting with primarily low carbohydrate diet. I’m one of those people who only lose fasting so the 18/6 is maintenance. On days like birthdays or family celebrations instead of being a Debbie downer lol I eat everything they serve but I limit it to only 60 minutes maximum. (That’s a little low carb secret, your pancreas doesn’t recognize carbs if it’s just 60 minutes or less within a 24 hour period). I’m so lucky to have found you, you are the ONLY doctor who actually understands. I’ve bought many products from you and I use the electrolytes and wheat grass during my fast. Thank you so very much Dearest Dr.Berg.

SIDE NOTE!! Don’t do the hour if you’ve just gotten off your fast, make sure it’s at least 21 days after you end the fast.

I did my first 24 hour fast today. I should have watched this video before hand :c But that aside, thank you Dr Berg, your vids have shown me the right path, I have been without sugar for one month, on healthy keto and intermittent fasting for 2 weeks and have already lost 5 kg and I am feeling so much better know.

It's interesting how most people I have met and talked about fasting immediately start saying why you should never skip your meals because it could seriously cause GAS . Surprisingly it even included many professional doctors. wow.
Imagine a society where the supposedly most intelligent people think like this..no doubt obesity is the big pandemic we have which remains unnoticed due to false misconceptions.

I have been on omada since June after watching your and Dr Fung's videos. This week I was trying a 3 day fast but might break it today on the third day. Got some diarrhea today, so might eat a little later this evening to break the fast. Thank you for your videos, they are amazing!
