Ancient Fat Burning Secret

The ancient Romans were some of the biggest gluttons of all time.

Yet, their obesity rates were a fraction of those in our modern society.

Does fast food play part?

Sure.

But they had greasy fast food and sugary sweets too.

In fact, the lower and middle classes ate fast food for virtually every meal.

But there were two KEY things that they did different from us:

First, they went for a short, light walk after every meal.

This helped with healthy digestion, but also boosted their daily step count.

The second, and most fascinating, thing they did was this:

They reclined on their LEFT side after they ate a meal - and even had their sofas built for that purpose.

Due to the layout of our organs, this helps the human body digest food more efficiently.

And, oddly, it works.

Give it a try if you don’t believe me.

I’m truly fascinated by ancient nutrition.

I even used it in my attempt to run across the hottest desert on planet Earth.

A film about that journey comes out September 7th.

They didn’t have processed foods. The average person didn’t own a horse so you walked everywhere. Everything was manual labor.

The stereotype of gluttony is only applicable to the upper class in the late empire period. Roman culture valued discipline and self control and the upper classes were expected to exemplify these values. The gluttony myth really only applies to a Roman culture that was decaying

A thermopolium (their "fast food") sold simple and affordable food that was suited for quick consumption. Common offerings included stews and soups made with lentils, beans, chickpeas, or other legumes, often flavored with herbs and spices. They also sold various types of bread, flatbreads, and small pastries, which were often served with cheese or olives. Small fish, shellfish, or salted fish might be offered, especially in coastal areas, along with cuts of pork, sausages, and occasionally poultry, which were often cooked in stews or grilled. Vegetables like onions, leeks, garlic, and cabbage were common accompaniments, either cooked or pickled. Cheese and olives were popular and easy to store. Seasonal fruits like figs, grapes, and apples, as well as nuts, were also available. Wine, sometimes spiced or heated, was a staple drink sold alongside the food. The menu varied depending on local ingredients, the season, and the specific clientele of the *thermopolium*, and the food was generally affordable, making these establishments popular among the working class and travelers.

It didn't have chemicals as today. Therefore they are not even close to our fast food, even though the name could indicate the contrary ("thermopolium" "thermo"-"hot" "polium"-"to sell") their diet was still merely organic.

Def had nothing to do with back breaking physical labor every day just to eat a loaf of bread and some olives for dinner...

It’s not about ‘calories.’ It’s about hormones. Walking after you eat has a comparable, if not superior, effect on one’s blood sugar as taking metformin.

Everyone needs to stop thinking about calories and start thinking about the interplay between leptin, ghrelin, and insulin and the effects of carbs, protein, and fat on that interplay.

Laying on your left side works for sure and it was common knowledge in most households during my childhood. Even when you have a slightly upset stomach it will help significantly.

They didn't developed the same industrial chemicals and industry in order to make ultraprocessed food, therefore their "fast food" was a lot more healthier than ours.

People are larger now because we have convenience of modern technology combined to greater access to fatty foods. Animals like horses are expensive so not everyone had one.

They didn’t have cars and they had to walk everywhere, no lazy things to do. You don’t work you don’t eat, pretty big motivator

Oh crap!! I just watched your videos and laying on the left side made sense! I’m Navajo and I grew up broke so we all would eat on the ground and the older adults would lay on their left sides as they ate and when they fell asleep. I would get told to lay on my left side too. Holy smokes!

Dr Casey Means would agree. Periodic movement throughout the day is huge, even if it's just a 5 minute walk.
