Social Security Administration should provide new SS# to every surviving person. Current SS number is too widely used and exposed.

Even with a credit lock Experian still allows a soft inquiry which was used to approve a credit card. Beware

Are you sure they didn't sell or info? How awful! Do companies not have strong cybersecurity in place? This isn't a third world country!

First off, the breach was ~2.7 billion records. Not social security numbers. Many people have multiple records.

The best way to protect yourself going forward is;

Freeze your credit reports. It's free to do, and you can do it online. If/when you need to unfreeze them, it's also easily done online. You used to have pins to unfreeze. But, i didnt need them.

Its a good idea to check your credit reports. They used to limit you to 3 per year. Now, it's 3 per week. All free.

The last thing i would do is, Lock your phone number or SIM (assuming your carrier offers it). This will prevent a bad actor from hijacjing your phone number, receiving 2fa text messages, which would allowi them to access your online accounts.

Be particularly aware of some one call you claim to be from SSA and who speak with an Indian accent.

Nice tips on how to protect ourselves for future harm of identity theft. I can say that & testify that myself, because i have unfortunately been a victim or scrutinized by identity thieves vandalism & it hasn't been fun at all! To say the least... definitely online criminals are lurking to scam & commit their scams etc...
Thanks again for the tips. 👍🏻

Respectfully, while it may be 2.9 billion records of some kind, it most certainly is not 2.9 billion Americans. There have not been that many Americans in the entire history of the USA.
