We examine the motivation equation by Piers Steel

Motivation = (Expectancy * Value) / (Impulsiveness * Delay)

Whereby Motivation is the willingness to do work, essentially the opposite of procrastination.

- Expectancy refers to how how much you expect to succeed at doing the task and thereby getting the anticipated reward.
- Value refers to how much you enjoy doing a task, and how much you’ll enjoy the reward.
- Impulsiveness refers to your tendency to get distracted by other things.
- Delay refers to the time lapse until receiving the anticipated reward

We want to maximize expectancy and value, as they are directly proportional to motivation, and we want to minimize impulsiveness and delay, as they are inversely proportional.

The biggest problem for me is that I set mini deadlines for myself, but then I don't respect that deadline, because there's no consequences for breaking them.

A big tip I can pay forward to fellow procrastinators: the first step I always do is promise myself I WILL NOT work on whatever my task is that day and ONLY do all preparation for it without actually starting work. This means I get everything I need ready, opening up tabs that I need to get the job done and planning out exactly what needs to be done to get it finished. Usually when I have it all laid out in front of me like that suddenly the task looks very small and manageable - and i then owe it to myself to complete on the task. This trick alone eliminates about 70% of my procrastination times. Kudos to Michael Kennedy's Success Method for this "mind trick" which works for me at least, I am working on the other mind hacks /gamifying to get my doctorate finished up

Interesting reason behind procrastination in some cases is perfectionism: You don't wish to proceed as the reality will never be as perfect as the idea in your head.

When I’m motivated to do something, one by one things started to pile up in mind. Instead of starting something, I became overwhelmed at how many things that have been piled. Out of all things to do, I end up being here 😔

That feeling when you really want to study but end up procrastinating by watching how not to procrastinate and realized that you're currently procrastinating and tries to go back to studying but ending up stressed and go back procrastinating again

Whenever I start procrastinating, it’s normally because I’ve become bored with the topic, it feels too challenging to accomplish to the standard I expect of myself, or the reward associated with it - a good grade - seems unattainable. To battle this, particularly in anatomy, I turned studying via reading and writing notes into drawing diagrams of the body and connecting ideas; making mind maps to help summarise concepts, and sometimes tables to compare characteristics. The really helpful thing was to change learning modes from passively listening to lecture recordings and taking notes, to actively challenging myself to question what was important from that lecture, and to assess whether I knew the content or not. A friend once told me “don’t waste time studying what you already know - spend it learning what you don’t”. I’m in my third year of university, I can honestly say that it’s changed the way that I perceive work and studying.

If I need to finish work I trained myself to just sit down and DO IT! It helps so much. Dont even think about what you are doing. Just get startet.

I like how you mentioned that everyone is different, a lot of procrastination videos tend to perscribe a one size fits all set of rules. Personally, having an accountability system does help me..especially when someone depends on my work such as in group projects.

I game a lot in the past.. i tried to avoid it through not avoiding it.. I played on my pc but have a auto shutdown at a specific time everyday.. It was difficult at first but as time passed by I realized the value of the task needed to be done rather than just play..
Games are there and you can get back on it.. Just do the task needed first then game later

Shout out to those gamers out there that are struggling sometimes.

Procrastination has really hit me hard the last 3 years. I procrastinate on sleep which ruins my sleep schedule, getting the lower recommended sleep required. I procrastinate on my homework by doing things the day it’s due. I wait last minute in everything by leaving the house for work or school last minute rushing, getting there barely on time or a bit late. It’s really taken a toll on my life and now that I’ve opened my eyes to the problem I will slowly work to better myself.
