While working for a lawn care company in college, I often got so hot I felt sick and even got close to heat stroke one time. I was so overheated after one particularly brutal day that I filled a tub with water and ice and dipped my hands in. Within seconds I felt shock throughout my body and ultimately passed out. My whole face turned white but once I came to, I felt cool to my core and got the best sleep ever that night. It was probably the worst way I could have done it but it’s proof that these systems in the body do actually work this way. It was a fascinating experience

Cold showers and ice baths have been a game changer for me. My body craves it now, if I go to long without one I feel it. I've had broken bones, bad knees and injuries in-between, ill be 37 this year and I can still skateboard, workout, snowboard and my new passion dual sport biking. Without understanding this I'd be sitting on the couch alot more than I am, thanks for sharing!

I learned many years ago in construction that if I could just keep my head and face cooled down every so often with a cold towel and water that I could out-work everyone else on the job site. From a layman's experience with a similar method I can 100% validate what he's saying.

I took a cold can to the gym and passed it back and forth between my hands for about thirty seconds between sets. I found that doing ten rep max, I hit ten reps for five sets where I would normally be down to maybe six by the last set. Thank you Andrew!

This explains so much about a beach I ran on. The weather was always perfect and the moisture. I could never reproduce it after I left but it felt like my stamina was unlimited. Distances that normally took effort was so easy I felt like I'd somehow unlocked super human abilities.

It sounds like an exaggeration but when you suddenly go from 2 miles requiring effort to 5+ miles and feeling refreshed everytime. Only reason I didn't run more was due to time.

After having cold shower even though I live in tasmania which is the coldest part of Australia 🇦🇺 people keep Continuously asking me if I’ve been smoking meth because I have so much more energy than I use to have which I normally have a lot, being adhd Though not just physically but now also mentally. Thank you huberman you’ve transformed my life in more ways than one. I’m even learning faster then I ever have. I’ve always thought I was a little behind or even stupid compared to most people and for the first time in my life I’m finally starting to get ahead of the game. I’m not saying I’m the smartest cookie though the cognitive functioning has gone through the roof. Cold therapy and clinical hypnosis is wild to say the least. My nan who I cared for full time for the last three years of her life would be more than proud of my achievements so far….I’m even meditating 🧘‍♂️ and sometimes I even go through a four hour meditation which isn’t something I thought possible until now. Meditation while pumping on adrenaline. Man I’m getting some wild lucid dreams ever since I started meditating. Thank you again for changing my life. 🤘🏿 ❤

I can verify the cold application mid-exercise. I don't comment on videos but I have to here.
I weigh 63kg, have been training for 3-4 years (mostly not effectively, just kind of maintaining) and within the last 6 months have been optimising my program with videos like this. I'm working on bench press, trying for the elusive 100kg. I've reached the stage of doing negatives to build everything up, usually peaking the pyramid at 90kg for 4-5 reps (5 sec eccentric), then dropping weight if I can't maintain the 5 count negatives. I took a cooler bag with those blue gel ice packs and cooled my hands for 30 seconds, then rested a further 60 seconds before repeating. I did 6 sets of 90kg, when normally I'd only get one and maybe another 3 reps on a second set.
Tried it with the dumbbell shoulder press. Found a weight where I struggled/failed at 8 reps (25kg), and then did 7 more sets of 8, sometimes even hitting 9 reps, where I'd normally chicken out and drop set after 2 sets. This is a game changer.

I am climbing instructor in my free time and in my peak athletic performance when climbing big walls me and my partner were always seeking to get up at 4 am before day light in order to avoid the heat because we knew that once the sun hit the wall and things got heated up and our performance went down significantly to the point we did 3 x the time we usually did when we were climbing in the shade.
Also during summer time we were seeking the walls which were most of the day in the shade or we choose to climb first part of the day when it was cold.

I dial showers down from normal to cold in increments, and how I feel afterwards is amazing. And being middle-aged any edge I can get on metal or physical acuity is absolutely welcome.

Been lifting now for 15 years and I tried this yesterday with a frozen bottle of water, Passing it back and forth in each hand in between sets. I noticed that during the workout I ended up drinking alot less water 30-40%. Also noticed a bit more strength as well. I felt alot cooler during the workout and had no fatigue at the end like I usually do. I think that there's something to this. Try it for yourself.

This makes so much sense. If you look at worlds strongest people, they all come from cold countries, such as Poland, Russia, Ukraine etc etc. Maybe living in a cold environment gives them extra strength

I've been going to a cryotherapy chain called The Ice Box. It's amazing how wonderful I feel everytime I go there. If I don't go for a few days, I can feel that too. I've had several surgeries that have become achy over time. This is the only thing I have found that makes the pain go away. It really is amazing how the cold can make you feel so much better.

It definitely works, I have been doing it for half year or so on some of my workouts. Two mins at about 17 celsius running water on palms, splashing face every ten seconds I can add 15-20 reps total to a workout compared to non cooled. That's with doing an extra set as well that I wouldn't have had the energy for otherwise. The first couple months my joints got a bit more sore than usual due to the extra strain put on them by the extra available work capacity, but that has gone away. Workouts also leave your body much less fatigued, even though going at or near failure every set.

This makes so much sense on why warming up at a fire we tend to put our palms towards the fire, we face the fire and get our boots near the fire, sometime to the detriment of the boots. And when we get too warm we turn our backs to the fire for a minute before we move our chair farther.

Cold showers rocks!
I have been taking them daily for about seven years. Started with hot cold showers and worked up to all cold. It was very difficult to adjust to the co, d showers. Probably about four months. If you will do them daily for about four months, it will become your new normal. When you get out of the shower, you will feel a rush for about fifteen or twenty minutes.

Thank you!!!. As a former high performance athlete and kind of old school (because as time passes by technology reveals more and I am 40 now)... I go to the gym 5 days a week and 4 out of them i do 30 mins of HIT in 10 mins cycles using the basic at its best for cooling (good nutrients, good rest and great hydration) and in between every 10 mins i go to the restroom and wet my whole head, take a minutes and go back... Thank you for sharing this valuable, now i understand why i can do more without knowing that what I was doing was okay :).

I have an opposite problem. As a rock climber, keeping my hands warm in fairly cold environment is a challenge for me. Once I feel cold to the core, I can't feel my hands at all & all my pulling power is gone as the body struggles to retain heat for its vital organs. My coordination is severely hampered & at times, even my speech starts to slur. This vid, however does explain why under cold conditions, the face, neck, hands & feet are the areas that lose heat fastest.

Very interesting! 50 years ago working for a farmer baking hay he preached the same thing! His thought was that your hands were the “thinnest” part of your body and and we use the cold water in our hands to help prevent over heating.
