Why is Joker II: Folie à Deux bombing?

The follow up to 2019's Joker might be the best example of completly missing the mark. Opening lower than the likes of Morbius, The Marvels and Black Adam it doesn't seem to appeak to critics, fans of the original, fans of musicals, fans of Lady Gaga, fans of comic book movies, fans of movies or anybody really. The ultimate Joker move is burning 200 million dollars on a movie that is designed deliberately to not appeal to people who liked the first movie and yet *still* isnt that great to those who didnt like the first movie.

I just don't get it. As a musical, it's bad. As a courtroom drama, it's bad. As a squel to the first movie, it's bad. As a statement, it has nothing to say. It cost 4x than the first one to make. The only rationalisation I can come up with is that it's a Gremlins 2 scenario, where the director was actively hostile to the studio for forcing him to make it, but it's not that smart, either. Were we the clowns all along?

It's bombing because of word-of-mouth. The movie was acted well and shot well, but the plot itself is a giant middle finger to fans of the first film and was done so intentionally. That gets around quickly these days.

This movie and the first movie now feels like the type of joke the Joker would tell when someone asks how he became the Joker.

Honestly, "No. The Joker definitely isn't a legend, he's definitely just a broken loser" could be a really powerful and important message if handled well.

So many biopics paint Ted Bundy like he was a charismatic genius, when in reality he was a mediocre, lazy, jealous, bitter incel who lucked and lied his way through life and still ended up a failure.

A legend was told about Bundy because it was a story that sold newspapers and that covered up for the cops' incompetence and bias, and it's super problematic, dangerous and disrespectful.

"No. These killers are losers, idiots, failures. Remember that." Could be a quite useful message... But you need a hero, otherwise why are you watching this movie about a loser?

Todd philips kinda did what the GOT creators did, where he just took inspiration from really good material (scorsese movies) and then when they had to create their own thing at some point they showed that theyre not rlly good at coming up with original ideas, they wrote for wolverine origins and todd directed hangover 2 so in hindsight it shows
