Joker 2 is an example of the people behind the movie actively hating the people who enjoyed and connected with the film, then deciding to specifically ruin the follow-up just to spite them. If it fails, which it likely will, it will be deserved.

They wanted this. They wanted this reaction from the fans of the first movie. This wasn't a mistake. It's an intentional hate letter to the fanbase. They wanted the first movie to be a success, of course, but they didn't want us to like Arthur and view him as a tragic hero as much as we did. They wanted Arthur to be a loser and so they made him an adject loser this time around. This entire movie was the director throwing a tantrum that we liked his first movie but we liked it THE WRONG WAY.

However they probably expected better reception from the snobby elitist critics.

Everything makes way more sense when you realize most modern western media is made out of spite towards its audience.
