Someone summarized it perfectly..
The Joker was about mental illness/breakdown
The second was about giving you one.

If the first film was watching an ordinary man descending into madness, then the sequel was merely about other people talking about him descending into madness, which is also a musical now.

They should have used this recipe: 15% courtroom, 50% mayhem, 15% musical (if you had to music) hallucinations, 10% character twist, 10% character actualization.

The best thing about this movie is the psuedo-intellectuals who think it's a great movie bc they "get it" and you don't - but in reality the movie is just a big metaphor on how Todd Phillips is sick of the Joker and it's unnecessary sequel he was pressured to make, intentionally making it suck.

Joker: I'm the Joker, baby!
Joker Fully a Poo: I'm not the Joker, baby!

Everyone seems to miss the point.

In the first movie, Arthur descends into madness.

He admires Murray Franklin but is mocked by him, his mother lies to him.

Arthur is a lonely guy.

After he kills Murray on-air and admits to killing the stockbrokers, he is hailed and made a symbol by others.

In the second one, he is jail for his crimes, where he meets Lee.

Lee ends up lying to him and rejecting him. The guard who he was friends with turned on him and killed his friend.

Firstly, Arthur is not essentially evil. He does evil things. All his killings were to people who were "awful" to him. Thatf is why he spared Sophie and Gary.

So there is some method to his madness. It is more out of anger and a sense of betrayal.

In the courtroom, hearing Sophie and Gary's testimonies, he realises that his actions have ruined their lives too, which was never his intention. He has a sense of justice, and didn't want them to suffer, when they were people he cared about. Also, Ricky getting beaten to death showed thaf again, Arthur's actions had consequences for others.

Arthur always wanted to be seen. In the first film he said "People didn't see me once. Now they do".

He also said on Murray Franklin that he wasn't starting a movement.

In the first film, Arthur was trying to be seen, noticed.

Yet in the second one, being Joker hasn't made his life any better. He realises that most never accepted Arthur, and he ended up hurting those who did. Lee only loved Joker, never Arthur, and his supporters wanted Joker.

So, in the end, Arthur still is never seen. He is more prominent, but it is Joker who has the attention, not Arthur.

The two movies are about a lonely man who ends up staying lonely.

I think what pissed people of was that there was no happy ending, no underdog victory, but a lonely mentally ill man still wallowing in his life, never finding what he was looking for.

Some might have felt that Arthur deserved better, but he killed six people. He is a murderer. He is not to give admired. So karma hits him hard and in the end, Arthur Fleck probably got what he f... ing deserved.

My opinion is that this movie was supposed to be a middle finger from the director to the fans and the studio who practically forced him to make a sequel he didn’t want to make. He made very clear he wanted the first one to be a stand alone movie. So he wasted as much of the studios money as possible, did everything he could to make this the opposite of what the fans wanted and intentionally ruined the first movie like so many other sequels have done. Todd Phillips may have just outsmarted the entire film industry and made a powerful statement about all of the unnecessary sequels and reboots that are being made for profit instead of passion. I think this is supposed to be a lesson that sometimes well enough should be left alone.

This wasn't a movie. It was a "Bad Romance." 👎

My wish is granted! This is why I prefer Joker in Batman (1989) and Harley Quinn in DCEU.

Jack Nicholson was awesome as the Joker who is responsible for murdering Batman’s parents. While Margot Robbie is amazing as Harley Quinn. Despite being chucked by the Joker, she redeemed herself by being herself and rejoining the Suicide Squad.

Joker one was a fucking masterpiece, but the second one was a disappointment for multiple reasons

The ending was a HUGE slap in the face for me. It made Arthur's story even sadder and unnecessary while also painting him as just another mentally deranged individual

Plot twist
End credit scene: this crap only happened in Todd Phillips mind and never made into a movie

That pretentious disaster is no misunderstood masterpiece at all.

This movie mentally destroyed me. The particular scene were they “took the joker outta him” was so disturbing I am traumatized from it.

Wonder Woman: does well
Executives: Let the director do what they want.
Sequel: Divisive

Joker: does well

Sequel: Divisive

Me: I’m sensing a pattern here.

Yes I hated how it took away the ambiguity of the first movie. It was the most compelling part of the 1st movie, the talking points. All gone now.
