Today we’re going to cover why people typically sleep better in a cold room. The temperature in your environment affects the hormone melatonin. Melatonin is a sleep hormone. Cool temperatures can increase melatonin, and melatonin can cause your body to run cooler at night. Melatonin is also affected by light. When it’s dark out, melatonin increases and helps you fall asleep.

If you have sleep problems or you want to help improve your sleep quality, you may want to try adjusting your room temperature to 60-68 degrees Fahrenheit (15-20 degrees Celsius) at night.

A few things that can affect sleep:
• Memory foam mattresses can contain heat. You may want to get a different mattress or get a gel topper to help keep it cool.
• Fans can help keep it cool.
• Keeping your feet out of the covers may also help keep you cool.

Potential benefits of melatonin:
1. It can help you fall asleep quicker
2. Enhanced mood
3. Better blood sugars
4. Enhanced cognitive function
5. Enhanced immunity
6. Quality sleep
7. It may help you feel more rested

A few things that could affect melatonin:
• Darkness stimulates melatonin
• EMFs could negatively affect your sleep
• Cooler temperatures can increase melatonin
• Too much stress can inhibit melatonin
• A vitamin D deficiency can suppress melatonin production

I love it when it’s freezing in the room and I leave the window open even in winter as long as I have my hot water bottle in my bed.

My room has to be ice cold. Even when it’s snowing my window is open all night.

Yes! It is 39 degrees outside right now and I have my heater off and my window open. I LOVE winter for this reason. Sleeping in a very cold room is amazing!

It's like opposite for me. I need heat, lots of heat to sleep and be cozy.

I can’t even handle central heating at all in the bedroom. It clogs up my sinuses and makes me feel ill even.. I sleep with everything open at night even in winter.

Once it was so cold at night that in the morning when the sun creeped through my curtains I saw a shimmer on my ceiling light.. I was certain that I had mat glas in my ceiling light. Closer inspection made me realize I had a 10 cm large icicle hanging from the armature.. it had been -19 degrees Celsius that night and didn’t realize it while sleeping.
I slept like a rock. Laughing myself silly because of the icicle the next morning.

i love summer but i always consider it the season of sleeplessness. no homes in the UK have aircon so if it's hot and you're trying to sleep, good luck buddy

I now understand why I always feel more tired while in an air-conditioned environment, such as in the car or in a room.

🤔 funny we were just talking about this a half hour ago. We leave ours at 65 at night.

so here's an experiment I've done on myself and I've noticed there IS an EVEN LARGER difference... WHEN I DO A PROLONGED FAST AND WE DROP OUR HEAT DOWN TO 65 AT NIGHT I CAN GO INTO MY FITBIT AND COMPARE MY SLEEP EACH NIGHT. THE SLEEP I HAVE WHILE DOING A PROLONGED FAST MEANING 3 TO 5 DAYS AND WHEN THE HEAT IS DOWN WHICH IT ALWAYS IS MY SLEEP IS SUPERB! EVERYTHING IS PERFECTION, my BR, HRV, Sp02, skin temperature and rhr...
I love it! Before keto and intermittent fasting I was on a CPAP machine!

My resting heart rate is also excellent so there's something to be said not just about turning down the heat at night but fasting especially prolonged autophagy fasts! For the record right now I'm at 129 hours and 12 minutes fasted :-)
💤 I also run a diffuser with lavender and a little vanilla. Doesn't hurt to put a couple drops on your pillow :-)
Thank you Dr berg!

Looking in from England - My grandmother always said to chose a bedroom that was in a north facing room - now I understand why.
