Perspective. If a single word could be used to describe this situation, that would be it. So, say you had to work on a weekend or a holiday. That could be a source of irritation to you, but for most of us, we love what we do! Then working an extra day at something we enjoy is not too much of an imposition! Plus, depending on what we had really planned on that day, are we really missing out on anything that was going to be so earth shattering important anyways? By trying to put things in perspective, it can help curb our desire or impulse to be upset at having to come behind someone and clean up what they broke! Plus, for the most of us, we are NOT working for free, and getting paid can CERTAINLY make us feel better!!
Another thing to remember is that no one is perfect. That no situation is perfect. Things happen and items do get broken or screwed up. Those items/situations just need to be corrected. That’s it! Try to train your mind into that yes, something is damaged or wrong and it may cost money and time to fix, but just focus and get the task done. The more time spent commiserating over why or who or what, you could spend that energy on fixing what needs to be fixed and getting back to whatever it is that you want to do! This is a trait that can usually only come with time and experience and can usually be one of the indicators as to how long someone has been doing something. A veteran of the trade is more apt to just go to work fixing the issue than complaining about having to come behind someone and fix their issues!
In construction, we install things. Usually, we install things in the proper sequence to minimize our workflow, money output, and head scratching! But, sometimes, things go sideways. But know this; there is nothing that is broken or wrong out there that we CAN’T fix! By nature of the job, we repair broken things. Motors burn up, light fixtures need to be swapped out for better ones, wire needs to be run from one point to another, and so on. So, if something is wrong or broken, even at the hands of someone else, we can fix it! It may cost us time and money, but it CAN be repaired. If you take that attitude, that nothing can be screwed up that we can’t fix, it will lend you to being able to take risks (calculated ones!!) and have additional options to install something. Think of it like a golf shot. Yes, you can take the safe shots and go for par and be average. Or, you can learn to take some calculated risks, a few more aggressive shots, and maybe come in Better than average!!
For the most of us electricians, we really love what we do! Otherwise, we wouldn’t be doing it!! So having to be the one to fix a screw up or issue, is something we would be doing anyway, just by the nature of what we do! Learn to love being the problem solver. Put things into perspective and know that EVERYTHING can be fixed no matter how bad! Just get to work!!

Love this video, and the channel too. Not just the knowledge you share, but your personality and perspective. The stuff you share in this video is every bit as important as how to do “x”. Good stuff!

As a 2-year apprentice nothing makes me more sad / upset than seeing my coworkers or boss get upset about a job that is fixable or that requires more time. Yes it does suck a little but you should be professional about it and really take this as an opportunity to do the right thing and learn

Dude, this kinda stuff is so inspiring and it's true everywhere. There is always someone who is going to be making a problem you gotta solve. That's life. And I love the mentality of "No way but through."

Good point
I used to be mad, but now I laughed at myself and smiled.
Just do it no matter what because we are all teams and work together.

Just wanted to say thanks for the advice, entertainment, and knowledge over the past year. I found your channel after an instructor of mine in school used one of your videos as teaching material before I was an apprentice. I can still remember just a few short months ago before I knew what I know now wondering what it was going to be like in the field, and watching your videos still working that my old job. Landed my industrial apprenticeship right out of school at the facility I used to do unskilled labor within which is a world-class facility, and didn't have to do any pre-apprentice time. Perfect grades, letters of recommendation, and being in good stance with my supervisors helped, but your videos made the leap from school to the workforce a little bit more digestible. Thanks again.

I do service calls for a living and I really like your mindset!
That's the spirit! Every problem has a solution.
I must add when you do this long enough, finding solutions becomes pretty addictive.

Great attitude. I own my mistakes if I make them, and don’t mind fixing someone else’s mistakes. It’s all learning. Like you said, I enjoy doing this every day. Did I get paid to work today? Yes, it’s all good.

I’m an electrical apprentice in MA. I recently fucked up, really close to being fired and this video gave me some new hope. That I’m still doing what I love.

I’ve learned so many practical things from having to rectify my own and others’ mistakes in the field, but most importantly the fact that at the end of the day, come hell or high water, this “thing” has to be done. That’s it.
I got some training as an apprentice from our service guy, and something he said stuck with me hard - “Surrender to the fact that it’s now in your hands, and your responsibility to see it done right. Just, surrender “.
He moved up to work for our local utility, I have his job now, and I fuckin love it.

I never get mad for a few reasons,
1. I love this shit, sparky for life lol
2. I am not a full-time business owner, I only work my own job during weekends, so for 5 days a week I get paid by the hour, so it really does not matter whose mistake I fix.
3. I believe it comes full circle, some people fix mine fuck ups, sometimes I fix other people's shit hahahaha, that's it baby! life is good

also happy to hear your son getting into the trade, he is gonna have a hell of a mentor!

I’m about to apply for an apprenticeship program and this video made me realize I’ll be better than fine! I used to be a pharmacy tech and that job was a lot of fixing other people’s mistakes. You do the best you can and learn from it! Thanks for your insight and for sharing your experience!

Dude - this one spoke to me

The foreman I’ve been working with for my first year FLIPS THE FUCK OUT over every little bump in the road. It doesn’t matter how small. It’s honestly pretty incredible at this point, like he’s pissed off that he survived the night.

Patience and your “just fix it” attitude has been the biggest lesson I’ve learned, by far.
