How to factory reset an Xbox where you get a black screen or green screen loop on start up

If you're unable to access this screen be sure to attempt it after unplugging your xbox, and power brick (if you're on the OG X1) for around 30 seconds. Then try it. If it still doesn't work, you should hit up Xbox Support as you may need a repair/replacement

Thank you so much for these straight forward visual instructions. I unplugged my son's Xbox 2 days ago and since then have had the dreaded green screen of death. School hols ATM too 😭. I've not slept well, worrying I'd lost years of data. This worked instantly. We did factory reset but kept apps and games. So relieved. I've watched about 8 stupid videos on how to do this that don't actually show how to get to the reset screen. Yours is the first to actually show how to do it (instead of just "push buttons and a screen should come up" junk).

I unfortunately have to re-watch this video frequently because my Xbox will often stop working (every month or so). At least once it is reset it works properly for awhile.

You just saved my ass man. Didn't play my Xbox One for about a year and a half and after I booted it up all the updates killed it. Your video got me up and running again. What I learned: do not install 1 1/2 years worth of updates.
