To be clear, in a lot of places you’re not going to get a fruiting tree out of an avocado pit, but a decent houseplant

You need a cutting from a tree to get the same type of avocado, they dont grow true to seed

Most avocados need 2 trees to produce fruit. Usually an A and a B tree. Also it takes around 10 years to fruit

Dominican here. That type of avocado is used as a side for our rice and soup dishes. Not a fan of it in guacamole as it has a very watery butter texture. Happy to see people are trying it though

Avocados can take up to 20 years to bear fruit when you're growing by seed. They're a very slow growing tree. Even then, you need a type A and B tree for pollination. There's a lot that goes into growing these little guys

I am from Brazil and ALL avocados here are like this one. We add them with sugar and milk and mix them. They make a very creamy, mousse like, delicious DESSERT.

This is a reed avocado they are more likely to give fruit true to seed, compared to a haas avocado (the typical avocado found in stores) which wont give you fruit true to seed, but ive never had a "bad" fruit from trees started from haas seeds but its definitely not a haas, if you want haas avos im pretty sure you need to get a grafted seedling. I like to plant 2 trees if you can to help minimize cross pollination from other avocado trees, unfortunately solo trees cant self-pollinate they need a buddy. The quickest ive have fruit from seed was 4 years. The sooner you get it in the ground the faster the tree will acclimate.

I believe most Avocado give out genetically diverse seeds

I literally grew an avacado tree by putting it on a plastic pot, filled it in with random dirt from the ground, then put it outside and forgot it for like, 5 yrs. And realised that it sprouted and then put it somewhere else, im so proud of it lol

In my experience, the best way to start avocado seeds is just to plant them directly in soil. They take slightly longer to sprout but they grow faster and healthier without the transplant shock.

It's therapeutic. Just don't give up. Ate an avocado at christmas, now - 8 months later - it is sprouting.

I hope you have years worth of patience because you’re planting that tree for your kids and grandkids to really enjoy. You won’t see much fruit for about a decade ❤

So lovely to watch the interaction between them! Human connection, respect and empathy shines through…

Usually, avocado bought in the markets and groceries are borne by grafted plants. If a plant grows from the seed, it may not bear. If it does bear, the fruit will be different from the one the seed came from.

You’ll have to graft a branch from an already existing tree of that variety to your seedling. Avocados plants will not give you a different fruit than the seed you planted.

I’m not surprised it took so long to sprout considering the tree takes around 20 years to fruit. They are soooo slow, but so worth it 🤤
Edit: they can take that long, not always. I was cursed with a 15 year old avocado tree that produces barely anything and a 10 year old that hasn’t produced at all yet 😢

Virgin Islander here and that's how our avocados look. I never seen the dark avocados in real life and was so confused when I saw them on social media.

In PR we just stick toothpicks on it and place them over a cup of water, changing the water regularly. They sprout very quickly

Your seed looked so huge! crazy!
I have been able to successfully sprout 6 avocado seeds over the last two months by keepin them in moist dirt in a recycled plastic cupcake container, no drain holes. I buried them half way n soil and Put just enough water to keep moist. Some sprouted sooner than others and are already about a foot tall in their own small pot and others are barely sending up a sprout. Im thinking that because some avocados were more ripe than others that those sprouted way faster. I will experiment again w these factors and try to focus more on this. Good luck to ya!

I had also grown an avocado plant, it hadn't sprouted for at least 4 months, and so I had given up and ripped the seed in two because it was already ripping even though there was NO sprout. My grandma decided to put it near other plants just to see if anything happened. Two months later, each half had sprouted it's own plant, and it grew really fast. One plant died because it didn't have enough space to grow, and the other we gave it to my grandma's neighborhood park but I haven't gone there for months so I don't know how that plant is doing.
