Why are people quitting their jobs in record numbers? | Counting the Cost

The pandemic has changed people's lives and in many cases their career plans.

After a wave of job losses in the past couple of years, many employees are now hitting the pause button at work and quitting their jobs in droves.

More than 24 million people quit their jobs in the United States from April to September 2021. And at least 40 percent of employees globally are considering resigning in the coming few months.

Elsewhere, Egypt's Suez canal recorded all-time high revenues last year despite being blocked by a gigantic cargo ship for six days and numerous coronavirus challenges.

People don’t wanna work cause wages are not keeping up, you work and work and you have nothing at the end of the day. What’s the point?

I’m a 33 Italian professional in financial markets and I resigned last week. I wasn’t completely happy with my company even before the pandemic, but the last 2 years made it too obvious to ignore. Lack of managerial competence, slow career advancement, absence of a company plan to enhance the value of the employee are few of the reasons why I left. On the personal side, I want to experiment a different lifestyle, a different culture and a different environment. That’s why I decided to relocate from Rome to Bangkok and continue my financial career there, despite not having another job waiting for me.

Money and work are parts of our life that can go up and down. Time, happiness and spirit are parts that, once past, can’t be regained back.

Cost of living increasing and wages staying stagnant. Simple. The reason why we are walking away is that we cannot afford the simple things in life, like a home. When there's little chance of winning, people often stop playing the game.

Originally the point for governments and corporations was to provide goods and services to the people and improve their lives. Somehow we've managed to turn this upside down and now it's the people that exist for the governments and corporations as profit has become the purpose of living.

This is the biggest problem we have to solve. Capitalism has an important function in society but a world where it is the most important factor just doesn't work as we can see it leads to billions living in poverty. That is unacceptable.

If minimimum wage reflected inflation it should be $25/hr and even then you'd be hard pressed to afford anything past the basics.

Meanwhile in Canada its $14/hr and Murica is $7/hr, that's less then a third of a survivable wage.
