Americans are leaving their jobs in droves. In August 4.3 million Americans quit their jobs. While some people have left the workforce entirely, job security and better pay are top concerns for others. Dubbed "The Great Resignation", the exodus of workers has created hiring challenges for companies and left millions of jobs unfilled. More than half of U.S. workers surveyed said they plan to look for a new job in the coming year, according to Bankrate's August jobseeker survey. Some 56% of respondents said adjustable working hours and remote work were a priority. Working women have faced an additional burden, juggling childcare duties, virtual schooling and their careers. So, what does the realignment of the workforce mean for employees and businesses? And what steps should you take before quitting your job?

Employers are "struggling" to hire employees because they refuse to pay a living wage. There's no labor shortage--there's a wage shortage.

Over the past 10 years, I've worked in IT, taught Computer Science, and worked in robotics/automation. Every single one of these jobs tried to make me work outside the hours that were predefined and then made me out to NOT be a "team player" because I challenged them. Part of the problem is coworkers not having the backbone to stand up for themselves. Quit being passive!

Why are millions of people fed up with being exploited, overworked, underpaid, and underappreciated?

Scientists are baffled. 🤔

Dealing with the general public is a nightmare! Why would ANYONE want to deal with crass, rude and entitled people for $12-15 hour?

I’m quitting my job because I hate it. My happiness is far more important than making someone else rich.

I got laid off in late January but found my passion last summer, skin care. I think I’m too old to go to medical school in order to become a Dermatologist so I decided to go to Esthetician school instead. Getting laid off was the BEST thing that ever happened. I hated my manager, she had horrible leadership skills and just refused to let me flourish and grow. In turn I was able to go to school full time which only took 5 months to complete and am now a licensed esthetician in NY. I recently got a job and it was a MUST that it be remote because now I have a space where I’ll be conducting my services and my goal is to work from there. I’m using is job to fund my passion and now the job isn’t using me. Fulfilled is an understatement ☀️

They said people weren't meant to stay in these "low skill" jobs.
They said if people didn't like their jobs, they should quit and find better ones.
They got what they asked for. Now they're panicking.

I'm a line manager in hospitality and never seen so few applicants. My company had to increase wages. Power to the people.

Employee: “Gee Boss, that sure is a nice Lexus you have.”

Boss: “Yes it is. And if you work long hours, never miss a day and make a lot of sacrifices, someday I’ll be able to buy another one.”

For too long, the overall mentality here in the US was "be happy and thankful you got a job", which gave all the power to the employers, it enabled employers to pay people less and demand more and treat you as if they were doing you a favor by employing you, it created toxic work environments, it promoted literal abusive behaviour, so I am glad that this is happening now, it's a sobering reminder to companies that they need the employees as much as the employees need them, I hope that after this pandemic passes, things don't go back to how they were before, I hope people will remember that time is precious and no amount of money can buy even one second of it.

Working yourself down to the bone for an ungrateful employer and low pay is overrated.

People are tired of demeaning garbage jobs where they get treated like animals by both the business and the customers, all for pay that can't sustain a single person.

Kinda funny how 10 years ago everyone was looking for a job and every employer would just shut the door. Well here’s their karma now. We don’t want to work for you.

For the last 3 decades, employers have shown absolutely no loyalty to their workers. There's no training available for potential new hires with skill gaps. There's no benefits. There's no guarantees of employment even on a half-year timescale. They should not be surprised that workers have decided to respond in kind.

Bottom line here:
1) The employment systems are broken.
2) Decades of DISRESPECT for workers/employees has broken the job market.

A vast number of corporations don’t care about those who’re struggling. Sadly, if mass resignations is what it takes for scrupulous employers to wake up and realise you need to treat your employees much better then so be it!

Love how all these corporate media reports all make it sound as if millions of us quitting our jobs is just some big misunderstanding between us and our employers. US employers treat us like dirt and we're fed up.

see, it's not just that people aren't getting paid enough. while that is a big factor in why this is going on, there's also the problem of Toxic work environments and awful managers.
