Should You Modify A High Mileage Car?

Modifying any car comes with pros and cons. But can you safely modify a car with high miles? This can be a tricky thing, doing performance mods on a car can bring more stress to the engine, the chassis, and brakes. Take some caution before modifying a high milage car.

Did you say 120, 000 miles? That seems like, just broken in. I'm looking at 220, 000 miles and thinking about doing mods :) Thanks for posting the video!

Nothing wrong with modifying high mileage cars; I do it all the time! You just have to be a bit more vigilant about everything.

The real downside to it is that it can quickly turn into a money pit! A sensor here, a re-ring there, gotta do this, gotta do that... And because the car is high mileage, you'll never see the money back if/when you go to sell it. But at the same time, don't be afraid to take pride in your accomplishments and enjoy the fruits of your labors. :)

I've got a 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix with 300, 030 original miles. Original 3.8 naturally aspirated engine and transmission with no rebuilds, never even had the heads off. I've recently put 1.9 rockers, PCM tune, port and polish, and A/C, EGR, and cat delete. Running better than ever, burning the tires off and pulling respectable 14 sec 1/4s.

Very valid question, the thing is most people won't even change to a high flow panel filter not to void warranty. most modified cars I've seen, or upgraded on personally was after any 5 year or 100k mile warranty. Also great advice from Charles.

Such good advice, Before I got a tune done, I replaced The coil packs (R8 reds), Cam follower and Got the Revised D Diverter valve. I had an 07 GTI too running fantastic. Bare in mind I was at 45000 kms so way less milage.

I have a 13B rotary with almost 152, 000 miles on it. Should I throw a twin turbo on it? 😂

170k mile 07 GLI Fahrenheit here, the go faster supporting bits I recommend are new hubs or bearings, whichever you can work with, that high pressure fuel pump is a bitch, and quite an expensive repair, as the lobe goes the spring in it can wear on the cam lobe, meaning that has to be replaced as well, there are adapters for them, allow them to be taken off easier so you can inspect them every 5-10 thou miles, HIGHLY recommended you get those if you're going to run more power. At 60k miles I highly recommend you replace that lobe and follower anyways on your GTI, odds are it's the OEM one and it's time before the wear happens and the repair is costly.
update or replace the stock diverter valve. even if you have the D series with the metal piston, it's a simple mod that will give you that nice whoosh all boost heads love.
good idea to look and injectors and plugs as well, a flash changes those ratios, from plug advancement to air-fuel, having those performing their best is the easiest way to get back some lost efficiency, and an efficient engine is a quick engine.
there's not much you need to do to get an easy and reliable 20 to 30 horses out of those 2 liter FSI motors, just a few parts that need replacing or upgrading, things Volkswagen specifically cheap out on, either to keep costs down on production or specifically limit output for class or regulatory compliance, that can be done in your driveway.

I have a 75k mkv gti on stage 2 tune. Running really well- agree to do a stage 0 tune - check everything first before going stage1 or high.

Lol here in sweden you don't tune your Volvo 240/740/940 until it crossed atleast 400k km. I put a big turbo on my 940 after 470k km. I consider that engine barely "broken in". That hade even amount of wear in all four cylinders.

I did a few mods on a 186, 000 mile 1988 Pontiac Firebird Formula with a 305 V8 at the time it was 2002 and I was beating brand new 6 banger Mustangs. Lol I was also eating Honda's and shitting Cavaliers with my old TBI ha ha. 🔥🔥🔥 I drove the hell out of that car for 5 yrs. I still got her but she needs the suspension rebuilt. Currently at 230 something thousand miles. She never was a daily driver for me, just a fun toy .

As someone who just bought a new 2016 GTI, I clearly want to get it tuned, but I'm not really a car guy...yet. Could you or someone explain the differences between the different stages of tuning? Thanks!

hey cool I think I was the 100, 000th subscription ... So would a Porsche Boxster with 100k be too many miles for a project car? Assuming it is in decent shape. I always thought 200k was considered high mileage unless I'm missing something

I'm having the same issues I have a 2009 Infiniti G37 coupe with a 122k miles. I already put a couple Grand into it, I'm hesitant to do more due to the high mileage it has...
