bro I'll be straight up with you the last time I saw a working 2000s GTI for under 5500 was a solid year ago, and I've been looking for one

The early 2000’s SI’s have a special place in my heart

Someone I used to work with had one of those VR6s as a hobby car to dump his extra earnings into. He said it was his most favorite unreliable piece of shit he’d ever owned 😂

He said was able to rack up lots of miles on it but stuff broke constantly on the fly. Reliability and longevity are two quite different things.

I like Civic’s for two reasons: availability of parts and ease of working on them. I didn’t know shit when I first started, and no matter how bad I messed up it was always an easy fix

If you spend about 2 or 3 grand more than the VW, you could get a Volvo C30 T5(Turbo 5cyl) with 227hp and a 0-60 of 6.5 secs and its a 3 door hatchback. The only thing that I've had for replace was a couple of coolant pipes. I spent 7, 250 on mine, and i love it.

Gen 1 Mini Cooper S also a solid euro choice. Pulleys, intercooler, rim and wheels and you’re good to go!

Here's the thing to remember about modifying cars: the more you do it, the less reliable they're going to get, because you're applying parts outside of spec.

Not saying "don't do it", just to be ready.

Toyota's are the most reliable cars to modify. They're underrated, they're overlooked and they're sleepers. The Corolla XRS models and the First Generation Matrix XRS has the Celica engines 2ZZ-GE and only they came with a C60 6 Speed Manual Transmission. The second Generation Corolla XRS, came with the 2AZ-FE Camry engine and the option of a 5 Speed Manual Transmission. The 07-11 Camry's are sleepers and the last Generation Camry's to be offered with a Manal Transmission.

Clio 182 or 200 RS for the European market are solid choices as well

The 12v vr6 is also very easy to work on and fairly reliable even when modded (so long as you don't cheap out)

Me with a 01 cummins and a 14.6 second 0-60 before my turbo and build, now I get 11 second quarter miles on all terrains and 2wd

I would add the Infiniti Q50 if you can afford around ~15-20k, and a G35/37 for a lot cheaper and reliable engine. Not to mention AWD versions are great for snowy areas
