just some notes for myself!

1)
Dont slouch - hand parallel to floor
Have a certain arch in your hands - not too much, but not flat

2) Don’t compromise speed for clarity - when you practice too fast, you’ll be practicing repeating all the mistakes. Better to play slowly and get it right the first times.

3) use a metronome to ensure even & accurate playing. Consistency in speed

4) Film and track your progress regularly! Sometimes you need a little push to show you that there IS progress taking place

5) Perform for others to have a goal to look forward to and grow confidence

7) Enjoy the small journeys - every bar, line, page you manage to master is an accomplishment in itself!

This was GOLD for me as a kind of beginner! I'm 56 YRS old and i play guitar (chord mostly) and im a decent drummer, but always had a heart to really play piano as my instrument of choice (IOC) ha.. I've watched Soo many videos of others and it just did not click with me. So I taught myself watching some tutorials and I'm ok but did not learn anything. I just did what they did.. my first video of yours was watching the fast fills video.. I cried because there was such a knowing that this is what and how I needed to be taught. I can't say enough. Thank you so much!!! You are a wonderful teacher and So encouraging.

Thanks so much for these great tips. I find the "practicing too fast" one so hard; especially when my goal is to get a piece up to speed. Love the comment about "baking in" your mistakes. I always remember the words of my son's drum teacher who told him right from the start; "What you play is what will stay".

Great vid and how so true. I teach clarinet and sax and have students give up because they cannot play their favourite song/tune/melody after 2 weeks!! As a pensioner I have just had my first ever piano lesson and I am looking forward to my keyboard journey! Best wishes to all musicians and, like you, my advice to all wannabees is Practice, Practice, Practice!

Thanks for this.

Regarding recording etc. I bought myself zoom to record and listen to my self on sax (the piano can record itself, but there's also convenience in using the zoom instead)... Soooo painful to start to use!! To really hear what a horrible sound I was making; sloppy rhythm, bad attack, limp phrasing... stuff one might not notice when concentrating on hitting the right notes. But it was really the start of a solid uptick in my playing. No doubt.
I hadn't thought of keeping the recordings, maybe I'll start a "logbook" folder of stuff to keep.

As a thought; ! maybe the overlap with recording / listening and performing (I've never done it) is to and to be able to keep going and leave mistakes behind... One of my many bad habits is to play a wrong note, realise it, then play the right note, and then carry on... Sounds fine inside my head but not from the outside!

I purchased a Yamaha P125 for the acoustic piano sound and feel, plus to be able to practice without disturbing the neighbors. My building also has a baby grand, so I can practice late at night on that if I choose just to mix it up... Thanks for your tips, they are right on point and will keep me grounded... :-)

Sir, Really appreciate your effort to make people more aware about playing the piano correctly. I am learning the keyboard. I can play most songs in my right hand if I know them. I also know most chords (major/minor/sus/7th etc). But my problem is I can't apply right chords to the tune that I play. I can't decide how to apply a chord and when should I move to another chord as the melody moves ahead in the right hand. I hope I am able to explain the problem. I will really be happy if you give me an answer.
Thank You.
