For developers having 64GB of RAM for specific roles is actually really handy. We locally test compliance benchmarks on all major platforms and spinning those machines up in parallel is a huge time saver - we're talking every flavor of Windows and Linux all while having 10GB minimum of RAM reserved for Docker and K8s. All the sudden you're using 25GB of ram before other programs such as pycharm, internet browser, slack, etc. 64 for these cases are just huge buffers to ensure that you could scale your cluster without causing any performance issues.

I just got the base model Mac Studio and one thing that I can say about the RAM is that if you are photo editing you may indeed need the 64GB version. I somehow managed to have the system start using swap memory when using only Lightroom with no other programs open. Lightroom ended up for some reason using over 22GB of RAM which is quite ridiculous in my opinion, I have never liked how much RAM it uses but nonetheless it did. Now given, the system never slowed down once even with it swapping memory to the SSD so it may end up not even being an issue but I thought I'd throw this out there for those looking to buy a Mac Studio or other Apple Silicon Mac.

Great review! Completely agree Max! I wound-up buying the base model with a 2TB storage upgrade. Previous iMac had 32G of ram as well and I never or rarely ran out of memory or swapped. Very happy with it so far! Waiting on the Studio display that I also ordered with tilt/adjustable stand and non glare as I work in an environment with lots of glare that can cause headaches for me.

It depends on what your doing. I’m running a Vienna Ensemble Pro Server on the Mac Studio (alongside the DAW), and despite the excellent swap drive speeds I want all of my samples loaded directly into RAM, so I got the Ultra, with 48 GPU cores, 128GB, 2TB NVME, That’s my sweet spot. With new peripherals it cost about $7, 700.
