The HORRIFYING Last Minutes Of Herpetologist Joseph Slowinski

Показать описание
Joseph Slowinski took his first trip to Myanmar in 1997. Ten more such expeditions followed, not only because the country was (and still is!) breath-taking, but because it helped Slowinski achieve his dream and fulfil his life’s work. Joseph was a renowned herpetologist, a scientist studying amphibians and reptiles. In 2001, at 38 years old, the man was already extraordinarily accomplished, having published over 40 peer-reviewed articles and one book. He was, first and foremost, a nature enthusiast with a preference for snakes. In fact, he specialized in the analysis of Elapidae, also known as the most venomous snakes out there. Coral snakes, cobras, kraits and mambas all are part of this specific snake family, and Joseph Slowinski loved them all, despite or maybe because of their tiny, deadly fangs.

Not only was this a massive loss for his community but the heroic acts of his team. How they kept breathing for him, in shifts, for a whoel day and 3 hours of cpr. That is intense and they were so determined to keep him alive...that's beyond impressive. I wish he had survived. he seems like a true wonder of a person.

The fact that he was calm enough and clear headed enough to do his best to explain everything that was going to happen and try to make everyone else as calm with it as possible is astounding.

Whats really amazing are the people that tried so hard to desperately save this man, for hours on end. Breathing for him for 26 hours. We need more people in the world like this.

26 amazing people spent 26 straight hours taking turns giving him mouth to mouth. that's an amazing display of love and caring.

The fact his team breathed for him for that long is amazing. They did really everything they could to try and save him.

When you keep on trying to handle deadly snakes over years and years, eventually something is going to happen. He's not the first and he won't be the last person who handles deadly snakes to die

I doubt his last minutes were any more horrifying than the minutes waiting for this video to get to the point.

Wow what an amazing man.
Such a sad loss. The same day we lost thousands of people simply going to work.

I am very sorry that this man lost his life and the manner in which he died, but what seems strange to me is why would someone, who was an expert on snakes, reach into a bag with a snake in it, only going on someone else's opinion that it wasn't
venomous? I would've thought that he would have taken a great deal of caution.

I watched this video without audio. I did not want to hear what was said. I was in Burma on the team dealing with this emergency, as well as the 9/11 attack in the U.S. As I had an earlier career with venomous reptiles I was placed on the team responding to the emergency. Later I was directed to address local concerns with 9/11 rather than participate in the response to the snakebite victim. The responding team was well and fully staffed with professionals capable of addressing emergency needs.

Everything that could be done at an American Embassy to assist with this emergency was done. I know, I was directly involved in the response from the onset.

I believe 2 Consular officers made the trip by air as well as our Medical Doctor. They performed emergency medical aid until it was very evident that the subject had not survived. Their efforts were, in my opinion, heroic.

My recollection is that the snake that delivered the fatal bite also bit a Burmese who was a member of the party. The Burmese suffered no ill effect from the bite. I later learned the bite was on the thumbnail and did not penetrate the nail. This may have contributed to any confusion about which snake, or perhaps what type of snake, was in the bag. The victim may have thought the bagged snake was non-venomous and made a simple, but fatal, error.

Without question, this was a tragedy. Less known is that Burma, Myanmar, if you prefer, has a great many snake bite deaths among its citizens.

So sad...why was he so complacent??? You can't take chances with ANY snake just because you've been around them for virtually your whole life.

This is absolutely heartbreaking!! Having said that, why was the team not prepared for a "worst-case scenario" situation?? From faulty equipment, to no Sat phone, to no emergency contact, etc., etc., etc. The number one rule in life that I live by is, "DON'T Assume Anything"...always prepare for the worst case scenario!!😢

Seriously Who would put their hand in a bag of an unknown snake. ☣️🐍☣️ ?

I’m shocked that he reached into a bag without knowing the species of snake.

No matter how experienced one is and knowledgeable what ever one does a second, moment is all it takes to lead to disaster. This man’s death was a tragedy but he left a written legacy and outdoor interactions of snakes in their own environment behind him.

He faced his tragic ending as a scientist, telling his companions what he was feeling as the venom effects progressed in his body. So tragic, and yet he still acted like a truly dedicated scientist. I guess if there is anything to learn from this, it's not let yourself become complacent, and don't take anyone's word for "what's in the bag?"
