Top things to remember when pruning Panicle Hydrangeas:

- Remove rubbing branches, focus on central structure.
- Trim spindly branches for an open, balanced appearance.
- Shape mature panicle hydrangeas by cutting one-third of the height.
- Trim above healthy buds for new growth and flowers.
- Consider personal preferences in shaping, allowing for irregularities or uniformity.
- Time pruning for mature hydrangeas before summer.
- Pruning enhances aesthetics by allocating energy to flowering.
- Leave room for personal touch in shaping for visual appeal.

I have what I think is a lacecap hydrangea, although I'm not sure because it hasn't bloomed in at least 3-4 years! It started as a variegated leaf, and now most of the variegation is gone, with plain green leaves taking over. But back to the blooming question. Some Master Gardeners have told me not to prune them because they bloom on old wood, so I haven't pruned in many years and now it's getting too large for its space. It's March here in Southeastern PA...should I prune back lightly to a growing node, or follow your recommendation for thinning and removing 1/3 of the height this spring and just hope for the best? Thanks.

I wish u would have put the cuttings way off to the sides to see the pruning more clearly. But thanks this is helpful

So...Here you didn't take off a third of the height. Why was that? Too young? Too short?

Hi! I'd have to bet this was taped awhile back, as my Hydrangeas are all leafed out, unless it's because of the type I have! Hmm 🤔 .. 😉
