Most Unreliable Car Brands - WhatCar UK Reliability Survey 2021

Once again we look to the WhatCar reliability Survey, this is the 2021 car reliability survey and in this one we're focusing on car brand reliability in the UK based on responses from 16,000 UK owners of cars under 5 years old. Would you expect Citroen to be one of the most reliable car brands?

Some of the results here are truly shocking, I really mean that, it's not a bit of clickbait. Would you ever consider that Dacia would be far more reliable than Porsche for example? Are Porsche really one of the most unreliable car brands in the UK???

If you could choose any premium SUIV what would it be? now look at the bottom of the list. Land Rover reliability is not great at all but neither are some of the other big premium brands. It's a fairly good showing for the French brands which have often taken a bashing in the past (including from me). I personally expect much more from the likes of VW/Audi, Volvo, Nissan, Ford etc.

Please remember that this is not an exact science, many owners will have had years of trouble free motoring with a particular brand, this is also only based on 16,000 survey responses and a winder pool of responses would have undoubtedly have given more accurate reults.

Thought provoking Jim 👍. So, I have the choice of number 1: Lexus, or number 2: Dacia… my heart says Lexus, my bank account says Dacia 🤣😉

I have owned loads of different makes over the years. Broadly speaking my experience has been that Japanese & Korean cars have been the most reliable (but not necessarily the best the word 'best' has a huge range of interpretations) and French cars the least reliable. Utterly unscientific of course but truthfully reflects 40 years worth of car ownership.

Dacia are reliable probably because they are based on such well proven and sorted Renault mechanicals, plus as you said - technical simplicity. If Alfa werent well down the list you'd be suspicious !

Mini as reliable as Toyota?!? What a load of nonsense

Table score is maybe not representative of ownership numbers which skews low volume vs high volume ownership. For example 5 MG owners have good scores versus 2000 Mercedes, or 340 Tesla’s…

However - good video with plenty to discuss.

I kinda prefer our surveys here in Finland where you get results from yearly MOT inspections.

I owned one of the first (09 reg) Hyundai i30 diesel estates. Not the last word in quality. It was built well enough, but from slightly cheaper materials. It never felt like it was going to let me down while I had it The steering and gearbox weren't quite up to (then) current standards, but I'm sure the newer ones are fine. I owned a 2013 Focus 1.0 litre Ecoboost, and that was frankly poor. At 4 years old and 50k miles, bits began falling off. No more Fords for me. The worst car I ever owned (by far) was an early 90's Peugeot 405. What a total heap of corruption that car was. Every time a service was due, there were also things needing repair or replacement, sometimes costing hundreds of pounds... I was glad to see the back of it, after trading it at a dealer around 40 miles from my home. I hoped I'd not see it again. How wrong I was. A week or so later, it was parked on my local supermarket car

I wonder why Subaru isn't on the list.

I owned various Fiats over a couple of decades and they were mostly very reliable. I ran a Tempra for nearly 11 years and a Multipla for just over 11 years and had to do very little to them other than servicing and replacing stuff that wore out. I did have a Marea which whilst sharing mechanicals with the Multi, was an absolutely awful car on so many levels. I now have Citroens which have proved so far to be very reliable.

I must be unlucky, we had Toyota and had nothing but trouble. Hyundai, skoda and Volvo, no issues.

I know a couple who bought a Lexus and much to his surprise had to return it as not fit for the purpose as it was so unreliable. He was as flummoxed as any by the problems and said it must have been a Friday afternoon special. There's always one exception. The most unreliable car we have ever owned is a Mercedes and the most reliable a Renault.

words can’t describe how happy i was when i saw this notification 😅. i think the brands is my favourite out of the surveys rather than the models 👍.
