The Most Unreliable Car Technology

Why do modern cars fail? A lot of it has to do with the modern technology inside of these new cars, and today I'm going to show you all of those different components that can fail and cause you to have significant reliability issues in your luxury cars. This includes all the major brands, and can even be found across most of the major brands. Yes, BMW, Lexus, Audi, Volvo, Toyota, Range Rover, Dodge, and more all have their own specific #reliability #issues in their #cars, but lots of these things are because of the technology.

When I buy any car reliability is the first thing I look at. My time is valuable and I don't want to spend it dealing with a mechanic.

You summed up why Toyota is so reliable: because they are far less interested in giving you cutting edge technology. They spend time perfecting the technology before they use it. Look at Lexus. Their interiors have so much plastic, it is a throwback to 2010. Is it reliable? Yes, but keep in mind that they have had 10 years to perfect it. Mercedes on the other hand, brings you latest and greatest technology, without possibly getting out all the bugs. Car manufacturing needs to ramp up their testing process so that they can bring you the latest tech AND getting out all the bugs before bringing to market.

I sometimes hate that my 1999 Acura CL 3.0 with 200, 000+ miles is so reliable, because it makes it so hard to replace. Reliability and an enjoyable driving experience seem to be at odds lately...

Good morning Mark, you know me reliability is first especially at the price of upper end vehicles, thanks for the video.

Performance has a cost, and it's usually reliability. But Chrysler... That's another name for Junk...

Equation is simple: High Tech + Turbo + plastics under engine bay= UnReliability + High depreciation + High Service cost

Less Tech + No turbo + No plastics under engine bay = Reliable + Happier pocket + High resale

I always buy my cars near the end to their production.
Problems have usually be identified and corrected.
I have had cars that early in their production were seen as unreliable.
I have driven them tens of thousands of trouble free miles with minimal issues.

There is one thing in common with almost every failure -- that's a degradation of materials. All materials have limits before they degrade including all the fluids seals and hard parts. In these cars higher temperatures and chemically hostile conditions due to poor servicing (like following the manufacturers schedule without considering the "harsh operating conditions" clause) will lead to premature failures. Another factor that is never really talked about is the actual quality of the parts to start with. The quality of almost any substance you can think of is almost always limited by the cost of some additive or the grade of the base product. If you consider some product like an o ring you can always get a better one that will last for longer however the cost increases dramatically. Most of the time these compromises are known by the engineers however the accountants win.

Years ago I did calculations on the expected life of the capacitors in an BMW E34 cluster. Using the capacitor data sheets it was easy to show that they were only designed to last about 8 years in the application they were in. The engineers would have known this, yet they still used them. I am sure you could do the same for almost every part of a car -- maybe someone will one day.

I could have bought a new BMW 340i with all the latest tech but for the same money i bought a lexus es300h as i wanted reliability. Sure the Lexus did not have latest tech but i like to get a car that works every time and is cheap to maintain.

Amazingly interesting video once again Marc!Next video suggestion: thoughts on Mercedes reducing line up with 9 models globally from 2023 😀

After seeing this video and similar ones on other car channels, many may be hesitant now of buying almost ANY newer car.

Interesting how the Cadillac Escalade, at 5 years of age, can be the best purchase value and the worst purchase value, at once.

Good video, the question I have about car tech is why can’t oldish cars (up to 4 years old) update the infotainment OS, is it technical or marketing?

More techs=more electrical components=more problems=more repairs=more broke=more stress. Hate new techs. All i need in a car is good trans, engine, and sound system. The rest is irrelevant. Auto open trunk, massage seats, air suspension? Hell no.

I bought an N63 v8 x5 50i on purpose to make content for my channel. Just made the first N63 video yesterday - replacing HP fuel sensor.

Technology is great when vehicles are new but a complete money pit after the 4 year mark. My 2012 BMW X5 35D has had numerous emissions issues. Where as my 2006 SLK55 has never let me down. Turbo/Supercharged motors put alot more stress on all engines components. Naturally Aspirated motors tend to give less headaches and have a much nicer exhaust note 😁

totally agree. many shit design nowadays but unfortunately youngsters are more focus at crazy low profile, rims, led lights design and motorized everything.

5:34 - "They're moving the grille size up." That's a bug, not a feature. I don't know why carmakers think we all want battering rams on the front.

It’s like a scale/range. One end is reliability and the other end is innovation. I just bought a new Mercedes GLE 450. I feel it’s a good combination of reliability and innovation. Mercedes is not the most reliable (not definitely not worst) but awesome with innovative technology
