The reason for this is if you happen to come across an oil filter that way overtightened it may not come off very easily or at all for that matter. It's better to just leave it intact which will still allow the vehicle to drive and give you time to figure out your next move. This is especially true for people with only 1 vehicle that are changing their own oil at home

Honestly, I punch the hole to relieve pressure to remove the oil filter. I work on Detroit 60 series and ford e450 v10 tritions. The oil filters on the fords suck so tight it’s hard to remove without it with limited space. But, then again my fleet gets oil changes every 5, 000 miles so it’s really low chance I can’t get it off because less than a month ago I just did the oil change

I was taught years ago to pre-fill the new filter at least a day or so before to saturate the element.
Also, with all the rain and flooding nowadays, if you drove through a flooded area, good change you took in water in the rear end as the vent is only slightly higher than the axle line. Trans vent too so inspect.
