I saw a video where an engineer and a professional automotive technician timed how long it takes to build pressure in each of the two situations. Then they sent samples of the oil to be analyzed. In both circumstances theresults were eye opening. I've always prefilled the oil filters because i cold see that the time difference between building oil pressure was substantial. I used mechanical gauges. I was an engine builder. Do your research. Don't take the word of some faceless entity on the internet who values clicks over your investment.

It can’t hurt but it can help. That’s enough for me.

I dunno, if you do oilchange on a 30 year old car every year. Let's say 30 oil changes, and you never try to, for example build oil pressure with the starter only you've basically ran the engine without oil for 2-3 minutes. I'd say it might cause wear over time.

You can NEVER drain all the oil from the engine ANYWAY during an oil change, so the residual oil protects components for like 60 seconds so it’s no BIG DEAL..

there is always a chance that a pre-filled oil filter may break during first start-up

80% of damage is done on initial start up and running the engine cold, not filling the filter will give you a lack of oil supply and pressure for a short time, which is never good.
If you can fill the filter, it is always best to do so., why would you even take the chance?

Phew! That's a relief! My oil filter screws in horizontally and there's no way to prefill without causing a mess lol

40+ years of never filling my oil filters. 🤷‍♂️😂😂😂😂

Smaller engines and engines with angled oil filters don’t worry about it. If your filter holds over 1 quart it’s recommended that it’s prefilled especially on high pressure oil fuel injection diesel engines (international) because it can potentially lose prime and take several attempts to restart the engine.

1-3 seconds of an engine running without oil is enough to cause significant damage, hope this helps you to learn something new everyday

If you warm your engine up prior to oil change, change oil right after that, there is oil on all the parts. The oil adheres to the parts, it just doesn't run off all of a sudden. If it did, Toyota wouldn't have small almost vertical upright filters on its 1GR-FE vvt engines. My 2015 Tacoma runs as good as broke-in new/it's 2025 now. I change oil every 3k miles. Never pre filled, because the oil would dump out anyway putting on filter.

But you need to lubricate the oil filter seal.

Its not neccessary as the engine in use will have an oil film on the moving parts and the filter will fill with oil in a few seconds anyway, its not a closed system and any air will bleed out naturally, thats why you never need to bleed the oil system like the fuel system.

Bullshit, always put oil in your filter 😂

It wil actually do more damage filling the filter exactly as shown in this short...it starts being poured into the prefilter holes and unfiltered oil ends up being poured into the outlet too. Not pre filling makes very little pre filling incorrectly has a chance of introducing foreign bodies into the engine that may cause damage

Even after the oil is drained from the engine there's still a coating of oil on all of the parts....

It costs me nothing more than an additional minute to pre fill the filter with oil…I’m gonna keep pre filling my filters.

Prefilling is cheap insurance, not much trouble and just worth the effort in the long run! Common sense says prefill.

This damage accumulates from replacement to replacement.

Ok, I thought you had ro pre fill rhe new oil filter all the rime. Lubricating the rubber ring thing on top makes sense.
