Did this 40 years ago, didn't lose an engine, but the amount of time lost cleaning the driveway taught me a valuable lesson!

When I change the oil, i always take a rag and wipe the gasket surface off, sure fire way to make sure nothing there but smooth metal.

Scotty, don't forget to mention putting a light layer of oil on the new filter to prevent the gasket from sticking in the first place!

This video made me dig in the trash and look for my oil filter I changed today lmao. Great advice haven’t heard of that before .

In all seriousness, this needed to be said! Sounds simple enough, but love that this is being seen by so many people. Just a disaster and a waste of time. Takes longer to clean the oil off the lower engine covers than to check with the flashlight 👍🏻

When you take the old filter off, make sure the gasket came with it. This has happened to me before and sprayed about 2 quarts onto my driveway lol.

I always wipe the oil off the flange before installing the new filter, keeps things clean and lets me check to see if the old gasket is stuck to it.

Recently changed oil myself, and it is slowly leaking now. I now see that this was the exact issue. Thank you Scotty

I always wipe down the filter mount where the gasket will seal with a clean rag. This will ensure the old gasket is not there and also remove any dirt or debris on the mount.

Changed the oil in my wife's car earlier this year and this literally happened to me. It's a good thing I always turn on the car after every job and have a look around to make sure all is well, that's when I noticed the oil spilling underneath. Turned it off immediately and no damage was done. Had I not checked and she went work with it the following day, she could have blown the engine.

A good way to make sure you never double gasket is to wipe off the area the filter came off of. Cleans the muck from any old oil off and you'll catch the gasket if it stuck to it.
